Glass handicraft has a long history with human civilization from ancient period. Glasswork is used for ornamental
purpose or for the household works. The decorative Bangle (plate 5A) is a popular article that women admire. Bangle has
social significance for married women in North India. Firozabad glasswork takes a special place in the world of glass handicraft.
The glass factory uses traditional glass melting oven (plate 5B) fueled by firewood. Perfume bottles (plate 5C) are greatly admired
because of their unique design quality. Persian influence through the Mughal Dynasty (1526 to 1757) has contributed significantly
in the glass handicraft in the Indian subcontinent. The stained glass Lampshade (plate 5D) design is a typical household item that
enriches the indoor environment. The multicolor glass cut composition glows in dark certainly creates a mystique environment in
the house. Each glass piece is arranged separately with great precision and creates a wonderful artifact. The decorative quality
has combined with the utility certainly makes a unique item inside the house.

Lacquer has helped in producing large number of household products around the country. It is one of the naturally found organic
substances that have enriched the design quality around the world. Indian subcontinent along with other Asian countries has rich
experience of using lacquer coating on woodcraft from ancient period in various household items. The mention of Jatugriha in
Mahabharata indicates the use of lacquer in ancient time. Furniture design in Gujarat (plate 7A) has produced some excellent
handicrafts for centuries. Same lacquer design is used in ritualistic articles (plate 7B) or in social events (plate 7C) during the
Navratri.

Handcrafted toys have a long history in Indian subcontinent. As old as 5000 years back in Indus Valley Civilization number of
recreational toys are found, this reflects their concern about children’s welfare. Indus Valley has produced large number of
animated terra-cotta toys. A few wheel operated terra-cotta bullock cart (plate 8A) toys are found in Mohan-jo-daro and
Harappa. Animated animals made in terra-cotta (plate 8B) are quite matured in term of their artistic quality. Bronze and copper
metal are used for various household items. Metal toys of chariot (plate 8C) exhibits their excellence in creating such matured
design. Along with this the Torso Figures with movable limbs are examples of excellent examples of ball-socket mechanism.
