The urban population in Haryana increased from 28.9% in 2001 to 34.9% in 2011, while the entire country experienced a 31.2% increase to 34.9%.
B. Density of Population
The population density of Haryana increased from 478 persons per square kilometer in 2001 to 573 persons per square kilometer in 2011.
C. Sex Ratio of Haryana
The sex ratio in Haryana increased from 861 to 879 as per the 2011 census. The rural sex ratio increased from 866 to 882, and the urban sex ratio increased from 847 to 873. Mewat reported the highest sex ratio (907), while Gurgaon reported the lowest (854).
D. Population in the Age Group 0-6 as per 2011 Census

  • Total Child Population (0-6 Age): 3,380,721
  • Male Population (0-6 Age): 1,843,109
  • Female Population (0-6 Age): 1,537,612

The proportion of child population in the age group 0-6 decreased from 15.8% to 13.3% in 2011. The sex ratio of the child population improved from 819 to 834. Kurukshetra district recorded the highest gain, while Mahendragarh and Rewari reported the maximum fall.
E. Literacy Rate in Haryana

  • Literacy Rate: 75.55%
    The literacy rate in Haryana improved from 67.9% in 2001 to 75.6% in 2011. Gurgaon district recorded the maximum literacy rate (84.7%), while Mewat reported the minimum (54.1%). Female literacy increased from 55.7% to 65.9% in 2011.

F. The Scheduled Caste Population
The percentage share of the scheduled caste population in Haryana increased from 19.3% to 20.2% in Census 2011. Maximum scheduled caste population was recorded in Fatehabad district (30.2%), while Mewat reported the minimum (6.9%).
G. Workers Population
The percentage share of total workers to the total population of Haryana decreased from 39.6% in 2001 to 35.2% in 2011. Rural areas saw a decrease from 42.9% to 36.4%, while urban areas experienced an increase from 31.5% to 32.9%.
H. Religions
According to the 2011 census, Hindus constitute 87.5%, Muslims 7%, and Sikhs 5% of the total population. Haryana has the second-largest Sikh population in India after Punjab.
I. Languages
Hindi was the sole official language until 2010. Haryana has a predominantly rural population (70%) that primarily speaks the Haryanvi dialect of Hindi. Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali, and Nepali are also spoken. Punjabi is the second official language, and as per Census 2011, Scheduled Languages like Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu constitute 88%, 9.5%, and 1.5% of the population, respectively.
