MBA candidates come from all sorts of backgrounds. However, the admissions committee may not have experience in your field. Thus, it is important to avoid the use of difficult technical expressions and convert it into an easily understandable language.
Business school applications are typically read by readers and on average take about 15-20 mins to go through each application. On the basis of the initial read-through process, the readers provide a recommendation about the applicant's candidacy. So your resume should be presentable.
Use proper margins and spacing between bullet points to make reading easy on the eye.
Consolidate repetitive information into concise bullet points wherever possible.
If you’ve held multiple roles or have been promoted at the organizations you work in, make sure you stack your job titles. This clearly illustrates your career progression and saves valuable resume real estate.
One of the most important things about your resume is to make sure your bullet points sound like accomplishments and not like a job description.
Example- Updated monthly excel files
converted to Create new excel files to automate the process that saved x time every reporting cycle.
Your MBA resume should highlight your personal, volunteer work, and extra-curricular activities more than a traditional resume. The personal interest section is one place where you can set yourself apart and distinguish yourself in the eyes of the reader.
These usually come from your current manager or a former manager. You would want someone who can authentically speak to the quality of your work. When you ask for a LOR, give them a copy of your resume, remind them of the accomplishments you’ve had working for them, and also suggest skills you’d like them to highlight in the letter. It is quite compelling to have an authentic and convincing letter from someone who has seen your work. ESSAYSQuestions that will almost most certainly be asked would be:
Why do you want to do an MBA?
What made you choose this institution for an MBA?
What is your career goal?
The best way to handle these questions is to clearly articulate exactly what you want to do. Paint a picture of your ideal dream job, and talk about what you have done, and the skills you possess. Then talk about how that institution and the program you've chosen fill those gaps that you don’t yet have. You may also talk about experiences, the classes, and the people you meet that will help you achieve your goal. If you make your essay interesting, it will really help you stand out.
You’ll be asked lots of questions that cover topics like your background, your skills, and your goals. So you have to practice a lot for the interview as it will increase your chances to do well.
Some of the questions that they will ask you would be similar to the essays, so make sure you really have your story straight and you can explain it in a conventional way.
The interviewers really ask you questions to see how deep is your knowledge in reference to your school. So you should research your professors, classes, etc. So if you are looking to apply, you should reach out to current or alumni students.
Another thing the panel is checking out is your interview skills. During the course of the program, you will go through various interviews for internships and full-time jobs. So the panel wants to make sure that you are coming in with a basic level of communication and interview skills.
Do not memorize your answers because that way it may seem scripted and you would sound robotic or unnatural
Practice with genuinity and generally come up with answers to some of the main questions, practice them out loud in an improvised way over and over and over again.
Walk me through your resume.
The interviewer has already had the chance to look at your resume, but wants to understand the “why” of it. Your responsibility as the candidate is to highlight some career accomplishments, but primarily to explain the reasoning and motivation for the most significant career moves made.
Why this MBA program?
When preparing your answer, select aspects that are unique to the program, and make sure your answer isn’t one that could be valid for other schools you are looking at.
What questions do you have?
Take enough time to consider this prior to your interview since this is perhaps the only question you can be positive will be asked in the interview. As a general rule of thumb, plan on asking 2-3 questions.
Why do you need an MBA?
The interviewer simply wants to ensure that your expectations for the MBA are in line with what the program delivers. They want to know you are real.
How will you contribute to the program?
To answer this question in the most productive way, imagine that the admissions committee has to choose between you and someone else with a similar demographic profile and with similar work experience. You should consider the following things while answering the question.● What makes you truly unique?
