Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM) is an online entrance exam conducted All-India by Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) each year. IIT JAM is conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India on a rotational basis.

IIT JAM exam is conducted for seven subjects of Science in order to provide admission to candidates in MSc and other post-bachelor courses offered at IITs and integrated Ph.D. courses offered at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Several National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) also accept JAM scores for MSc admissions.

  • It is the first time when IIT Varanasi, IIT Bhilai and IIT Palakkad are offering admission through JAM 2020.

  • A candidate can apply for at most two test papers in IIT JAM Exam.

  • The application fee for IIT JAM 2020 is as follows:

  • Female/SC/ST/PwD - ₹ 750 (for one paper), ₹ 1050 (for two papers)

  • All Others - ₹ 1500 (for one paper), ₹ 2100 (for two papers)

  • The online examination will be held in two sessions. The schedule for different test papers of JAM 2020 is given below.

JAM Eligibility Criteria 2020

The Eligibility criteria of JAM 2020 is the minimum marks required by candidates to apply for the different courses offered. A few important points related to the eligibility is given here.

  • All the candidates who wish to appear for JAM 2020 must have completed their undergraduate in a related subject.

  • The eligibility criteria for the different subjects will be different.

  • If the candidates do not fulfill the eligibility criteria their admission can be revoked at any step of the admission process.

  • Candidates must make sure to go through the eligibility criteria of each subject carefully before applying for the examination.

Note: Through Biological Sciences (BL) paper candidates can secure admission in integrated PhD course only offered at IISc.

IIT JAM 2020 exam dates are out. The Science entrance exam is scheduled to be conducted on February 10 by IIT Kanpur.

  • JAM (Joint Admission Test) 2020 will be held on 10th February 2020.

  • IIT JAM 2020 will be conducted by IIT Kanpur. Last year, IIT Kharagpur conducted JAM 2019 Exam.

IIT JAM 2019 Subject-wise Cut off            

The expected subject-wise Cut off of IIT JAM 2019 is mentioned here. Based on these cutoffs, the total test population and marks obtained by candidate, rank of candidates are decided. There is a variation in IIT JAM Cut offs for different categories. The JAM 2019 Cut offs are the minimum marks to be able to register for IIT JAM 2019. 

The Final Cut off may vary. IIT JAM Cut off 2019 will be nearly same as last year’s cut off. Candidates can know the expected IIT JAM Cut off 2019 below:

IIT JAM 2020 Exam Pattern

  • IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2020 will be different for different courses opted by the students.

  • Exam Mode: The examination is computer-based.

  • Session: The exam takes place in two sessions, i.e. 9 AM to 12 Noon & 2 PM to 5 PM.

  • Sections: In the examinations, the questions will be asked in three different patterns such as Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

  • Number of Papers: JAM Exam is conducted for a total of seven papers.

  • Duration: The exam duration is three hours.

  • Medium of Examination: English only

  • Total Number of Questions: 60 questions asked

  • Marks: The question paper will be of 100 marks.

  • Negative Marking: There will be negative marking only in Section A.

Preparation tips for IIT JAM:

All the IIT JAM aspirants should prepare very well for the exam and should follow certain tips and tricks to achieve desired results.  The students must be aware of all the current trends and any changes that might have been introduced. This can be done by analyzing the IIT JAM previous year papers to know everything about what they need to study and how to accomplish it.

IIT JAM 2020 Process

Step 1: IIT JAM Application Form Filling

Candidates need to apply online for IIT JAM 2020 registrations. Candidates need to visit the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) link present on the official website of the exam and fill the IIT JAM 2020 application form there.

IIT JAM 2020 application fee also needs to be paid online only via net banking/ debit card/ credit card. Please note that Candidates can apply for a maximum of two test papers at a time. But for appearing for the second test paper, candidates need to pay an additional application fee.

Note: If you are applying for two test papers, make sure that both the exams are being conducted in different sessions.

After the payment is made, a Fee Payment Number will be generated, which must be saved by the candidate for later use.

Official IIT JAM website states that “An application once submitted cannot be changed/rectified."


Step 2: IIT JAM Admit Card

 IIT JAM 2020 admit cards can be downloaded from the official website of the exam. After downloading the admit card, candidates need to take a print out of it and carry it to the allotted exam centre along with a valid ID proof (original).

Candidates not carrying the admit card and ID proof might not be allowed to appear for JAM 2020 exam.


Step 3: Take IIT JAM Exam 

Candidates need to appear for IIT JAM 2020 exam at the exam centre allotted to them. Candidates can appear for one or two IIT JAM test papers as explained but need to make sure that both exams are being conducted in different sessions.


Step 4: Check IIT JAM Result

IIT JAM 2020 result will be declared on the official website of the exam.

Candidates are given an All India Rank (AIR) or each test paper in IIT JAM 2020. Based on AIR, an All India Merit List is prepared. Candidates whose names/ roll numbers appear in the merit list will then be eligible for admission in MSc courses offered at IITs and integrated Ph.D. programmes offered at IISc.


IIT JAM Counselling Process

Step 5: Fill Admission Form

Qualifying candidates need to fill the admission form available on the official website of JAM 2020.

According to the official website, "Irrespective of whether a candidate qualifies in one or two test papers, only one duly-completed admission form needs to be submitted."

After filling the admission form, candidates need to pay a processing fee of Rs 600 in the online mode through JOAPS.


Step 6: Check Admission List

After the submission of admission form along with the processing fee, an admission list will be declared on the official website of the exam. Offer letters will be sent by the respective admitting college/ institute(s) to candidates after the declaration of the list.

After receiving the offer letter, candidates need to submit an acceptance form along with an advance seat booking fee in the online mode through JOAPS.


Acceptance Fee:

General/ OBC – Non Creamy Layer - Rs 10,000

SC/ ST/ PwD - Rs 5,000

After this, candidates will be allotted seats and their IIT JAM 2020 admission process will be complete.

If seats remain vacant after the first admission list, two more admission lists will be declared for candidates.


Note: “Being in the merit list of any test paper neither guarantees nor provides any automatic entitlement for admission. Admissions shall be made in order of merit and depending on the number of seats available at the admitting institute(s),” states the official website.

It may also be noted that admission in IISER Bhopal, IISER Pune and Centralized Counselling for MSc/ MSc (Tech) for NITs (CCMN) will not be done through common JAM admission process, informs the official website.

  • After the choice of exam centre is given the system will automatically detect the IIT Zone.

  • The same has to be followed for the second and third preference.

  • IIT JAM Exam Centres 2020 once allotted will not be changed.

    IIT JAM 2020 Admission Procedure

  • The candidates who qualify the examination (whose names appear in the merit list) will be eligible to appear in IIT JAM Counselling Procedure.

  • Candidates have to fill the admission form available in the first week of April 2020 through online mode.

  • On the basis of qualified test papers, candidates should apply for one or more academic courses.

  • In the admission form, candidates have to fill a choice of courses in order of preference, educational qualifications, the percentage of marks/CGPA, category, PwD status, etc.

  • Candidates have to pay  an admission fee of INR 600. The first admission list will be released in the fourth week of May 2020.

  • Admission offers are sent by respective institutes to the candidates.

  • Acceptance form must be submitted and advance seat booking fee of INR 10000 (General/OBC-NCL candidates) and INR 5000 (SC/ST/PWD) must be paid thereafter.

  • If seats remain vacant, the second admission list will be published on the website. After seat allotment, candidates have to visit the allotted college to complete the admission process. The fee paid will be adjusted with the institute fee after admission.

  • IIT JAM 2020 Third and final admission list will be prepared if seats still remain vacant.

  • Qualified candidates who are not allotted a seat in the 1st and 2nd admission round will remain on the waiting list.

  • Anyone who does not accept the acceptance offer from the institute will be removed from the admission process.
