• The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistical measure used to evaluate a country’s overall performance in social and economic dimensions.
  It assesses three key aspects of human development:
  • An Extended and Healthy Life: Reflects health outcomes and life expectancy.

  • A Good Standard of Living: Assesses income and standard of living.
• Kerala has made significant strides in reducing intra-State disparities and gender gaps in various human development indicators. Gender equality in education and health has not fully translated into equal social and economic opportunities for women. Furthermore, while certain social groups in Kerala have seen advances, they still lag behind in some human development indicators compared to the broader Keralite population.

• Kerala stands out among Indian States for its high level of human development, comparable to many advanced countries, despite having a significantly lower per capita income. The state has ranked first in India in the Human Development Index (HDI) for the years 1981, 1991, and 2001, although its per capita income lagged behind the national average until recently. This discrepancy highlights Kerala's effective translation of public action into tangible improvements, particularly in education and health services.

Humorously, some suggest that Communism's most notable impact on Kerala is the availability of affordable labor from West Bengal.

The Maharajah of Travancore established the first girls' school in the early 19th century, setting a precedent that neighboring kingdoms, such as Cochin, followed. Christian missionaries also played a significant role by running schools that admitted girls, further advancing educational opportunities for women.
