1. What is the structure of mitochondria?
Ans. Mitochondria are double-membrane-bound organelles found in most eukaryotic cells. They have an outer membrane and an inner membrane, with a space in between known as the intermembrane space. The inner membrane is highly folded into structures called cristae, which increase the surface area for cellular respiration.
2. How do mitochondria generate energy?
Ans. Mitochondria generate energy through a process called cellular respiration. They use the oxygen we breathe in and the nutrients we consume to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the main energy currency of cells. This process involves the breakdown of glucose and other molecules in a series of biochemical reactions known as the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
3. What is the role of mitochondria in cell death?
Ans. Mitochondria play a crucial role in cell death through a process called apoptosis. During apoptosis, mitochondria release certain proteins that activate a cascade of events leading to cell death. This is an important mechanism for removing damaged or unwanted cells from the body. However, dysfunction in mitochondrial apoptosis pathways can contribute to various diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.
4. Can mitochondria be inherited?
Ans. Yes, mitochondria can be inherited, but the inheritance pattern is different from that of nuclear DNA. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is passed down from the mother to her offspring. This is because the sperm contributes very little, if any, mitochondrial DNA to the fertilized egg. Therefore, genetic disorders caused by mutations in mtDNA are typically inherited maternally.
5. What happens when mitochondria dysfunction occurs?
Ans. Mitochondrial dysfunction can have various consequences depending on the affected cells and tissues. It can lead to reduced energy production, as well as the accumulation of harmful byproducts and reactive oxygen species. This can result in a wide range of symptoms and diseases, including muscle weakness, neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular problems.
