Detailed Summary

Sid slept on, undisturbed. Tom continued groaning, even feeling pain in his toe. He tried harder, but Sid still didn't wake up. Tom, getting impatient, shook Sid and called his name. Finally, Sid woke up and asked what was wrong. Tom kept groaning, pretending to be in great pain. Sid, worried, asked how long Tom had been feeling this way. Tom, exaggerating, said it had been hours. He asked Sid not to call anyone and kept groaning. Tom even forgave Sid for everything he had done to him, pretending he was on his deathbed. Sid, feeling scared, ran off to get help. Sid rushed to Aunt Polly, claiming Tom was dying. Aunt Polly, initially skeptical, followed Sid upstairs with Mary. When she saw Tom, she was shocked and asked what was wrong. Tom claimed his toe was mortified, infected, which made Aunt Polly laugh and cry in relief. 

Aunt Polly calmed down and inspected Tom's tooth, finding it loose but not serious. She decided to pull it out but Tom, now feeling better, begged her not to. Aunt Polly, realizing Tom's antics were to skip school and go fishing, was both relieved and exasperated. Aunt Polly prepared to extract the tooth by tying a silk thread to it and the bedpost. She used a chunk of fire to remove the tooth, which ended up dangling by the bedpost. Tom, now relieved, promised not to fake illness again. In the end, Aunt Polly, though frustrated by Tom's mischief, couldn't help but love him dearly. Tom learned his lesson and hopefully wouldn't try such tricks again. And so, the day ended with Tom a bit wiser and Aunt Polly a bit more patient.
