Q.12. Prove by direct method that for any integer ‘n’, n3 – n is always even. [Hint: Two cases (i) n is even, (ii)  n is odd.]
Ans. We have two cases:
Case I: If n is even
Let n = 2k where k ∈ N
∴ n3 – n = (2k)3 – (2k)
= 2k(4k2 – 1) = 2m,
where m = k(4k2 – 1)
Therefore (n3 – n) is even.
Case II: If n is odd.
Let n = (2k + 1), k ∈ N
n3 - n = (2k + 1)3 - (2k + 1)
= (2k + 1) [(2k + 1)2 - 1]
= (2k + 1) (4k2 + 4k + 1 - 1]
= (2k + 1) (4k2 + 4k)
= 4k(2k + 1) (k + 1)
= 2.2k(2k + 1)(k + 1)
= 2λ where λ = 2k(2k + 1)(k + 1)
Therefore n3 - n is even.
Hence, n3 – n is always even.

Q.13. Check the validity of the following statement. 
(i) p : 125 is divisible by 5 and 7. 
(ii) q : 131 is a multiple of 3 or 11.
Ans.
(i) Given that:
p : 125 is divisible by 5 and 7.
Let q : 125 is divisible by 5.
and r : 125 is divisible by 7.
Here q is true and r is false.
⇒ q ∧ r is false.
Hence, p is not valid.
(ii) Given that:
q : 131 is a multiple of 3 or 11.
Let p : 131 is a multiple of 3.
and r : 131 is a multiple of 11.
Here p is not true and r is also not true i.e., false.
So, p ν r is false.
Hence, q is not valid.

Q.14. Prove the following statement by contradication method. 
p : The sum of an irrational number and a rational number is irrational.
Ans. Let p is false i.e., the sum of an irrational number and a rational number is rational.
Let √λ is irrational and n is rational number
⇒  √λ + n = r (rational)
⇒  √λ = r – n
We observe that  √λ is irrational where as (r – n) is rational which is a contradiction.
So, our supposition is wrong.
Hence, p is true.

Q.15. Prove by direct method that for any real numbers x, y if x = y, then x2 = y2.
Ans. Let p : x = y, x, y ∈ R
On squaring both sides we have
x2 = y2 : q (say)
⇒ p = q
Hence, proved.

Q.16. Using contrapositive method prove that if n2 is an even integer, then n is also an even integers.
Ans. Let p : n2 is an even integer.
q : n is also an even integer.
Also let ~ q is true i.e. n is not an even integer.
⇒ n2 is not an even integer
⇒ ~ p is true. [∴ square of an odd integer is odd]
