A pregnant and a lactating mother requires additional energy over and above her normal requirements, inadequate intake of nutrients causes harm to the foetus & the child and also sportsperson always needs to consume more calories than a non sportsperson because they undergo physical training which involves regular strenuous exercises for a long period for developing physical fitness that is why it is important to recommend special diet for pregnant and lactating women and sportpersons.

Water is considered a necessary constituent of the diet because it acts as the medium for biochemical reactions by breaking down complex food molecules, water transport food, chemicals and gases throughout the body and it is also eliminate the wastes as urine and sweat.

- Marasmus: Under-nutrition, specially protein deficiency causes this diseases in children. Children with this condition have lost lot of muscle mass and subcutaneous fat.

- Beri beri: This diseases happens due to deficiency of vitamin B1.
