Working with Poem

Q1. The poet says, “Beauty is heard in …”

Can you hear beauty? Add a sound that you think is beautiful to the sounds the poet thinks are beautiful.
The poet, Shelley, said:
Heard melodies are sweet,
But those unheard are sweeter.

What do you think this means? Have you ever ‘heard’ a song in your head, long after the song was sung or played?
Ans: Yes, we do hear beautiful sounds. For instance, the chirping of birds is also beautiful.

The poet says that when we hear melodies, we find it sweet but after hearing those melodies when we imagine about melodies i.e., unheard melodies we found it more sweeter than the original melody itself.

Yes, I have heard songs in my head long after the song was sung or played.

2. Read the first and second stanzas of the poem again. Note the following phrases.
corn growing, people working or dancing, wind sighing, rain falling, a singer chanting
These could be written as
• corn that is growing
• people who are working or dancing

Can you rewrite the other phrases like this? Why do you think the poet uses the shorter phrases?
Ans: Here are some examples of more such short phrases:
stream flowing, wind blowing, children laughing, mob shouting, etc. These can be rewritten as: stream that is flowing, wind that is blowing, children who are laughing, and mob that is shouting.

I think the poet uses the shorter phrases to give a musical rhythm to the lines and enhance the beauty of the poem.

3. Find pictures of beautiful things you have seen or heard of.
 Ans:

  • A blooming flower in the garden
  • A sunset by the ocean
  • Snow-covered mountains
  • A rainbow after the rain
  • A starry night sky

You can look for images like these that show natural beauty or things that make you feel calm and happy.

4. Write a paragraph about beauty. Use your own ideas along with the ideas in the poem. (You may discuss your ideas with your partner.)
Ans:
Beauty is something that can be seen in everything around us, from nature to small moments in life. It is not just about how something looks, but how it makes us feel. For example, the beauty of a sunset lies in the colors that fill the sky and the peace it brings. The poem reminds us that beauty is everywhere, even in the most unexpected places, like in a kind act or a simple smile. Beauty, whether seen or felt, brings joy and makes us appreciate the world in a different way.
