Uppada Jamdani Sarees

• Brief Note on Uppada Sarees: Uppada Jamdani Sarees are delicate Silk Sarees with origins in Uppada, Andhra Pradesh. Jamdani, also known as muslin, is a handwoven fabric. The term 'Jamdani' loosely translates to 'flower vase' in Persian, with 'jam' meaning flower and 'dani' meaning vase. This weaving technique is believed to have Bengali roots.
• The creation of Jamdani involves two weavers working collaboratively on a pit loom. They pass the weft and warp threads required for the fabric's base back and forth. The designs are intricately woven in, resembling embroidery work.

Unique Features

• Weaving Technique: Utilizing Galla, Adda, and various thilis based on the design.
• Design Characteristics: The designs seamlessly merge into the fabric, distinctly visible on both sides. No loose or unfinished ends are present on the reverse side, and the design is integral to the cloth's surface.
  

GI Registration

• Uppada Sarees have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Government of India's Geographical Registry since April 10, 2008.

The One District One Product (ODOP) initiative aims to support balanced regional development in all districts of India. It involves selecting and promoting one unique product from each district to:

Action Plan

The action plan for the ODOP initiative includes:

• Offering training programs in weaving, designing, and dyeing through government schemes
• Providing financial assistance via MUDRA loans
• Granting old age pensions through the YSR Pension Kanuka scheme
• Facilitating marketing opportunities through exhibitions
• Providing  Rs.24000/ Per annum as financial support under the YSR Netanna Nestam Scheme to handloom weavers for upgrading looms and creating new designs.
