Introduction

• In Tirupati District, around 30,000 weavers are directly or indirectly involved in the weaving profession, encompassing activities such as dying, designing, sizing, and warping. 
• The Handloom Industry in this region is predominantly centered around Venkatagiri, where weavers create renowned Venkatagiri Pattu and Cotton Sarees using traditional handlooms.

History

• Weaving in Venkatagiri traces its origins back over 300 years, initially supported by the Velugoti dynasty. Initially, a select group of weavers were sponsored by the dynasty to craft dhotis and turbans from soft cotton with intricate embroidery for the royal family. 
• The Venkatagiri Sarees, celebrated for their exquisite weaving, have a history dating back to the early 1700s when they were crafted in an artisan cluster near Nellore, known as Venkatagiri. Originally referred to as 'Kali Mili,' these sarees gained prominence through the patronage of the Velugoti Dynasty in Nellore. 
• During the 18th century, the rulers of the Asaf Jahi dynasty implemented policies that attracted textile artisans from central and western India to settle in the Andhra region.

One District One Product Initiative

• Venkatagiri Sarees are renowned for their meticulous weaving and durability, crafted using pit looms fixed at ground level. Weavers predominantly create sarees from zari cotton, cotton and silk blends, and pure silk. 
• Recently, they have incorporated the Jamdani technique from Bangladesh to diversify the range of Venkatagiri Sarees. Award-winning creations include Venkatagiri Sarees featuring Jamdani designs and weavers honored with the Sant Kabir Award for their exceptional use of the Jamdani technique in crafting these sarees.

India's Rich Cultural Heritage under ODOP

• India's diverse cultural heritage is being promoted under the "ONE DISTRICT ONE PRODUCT" (ODOP) initiative.
• Venkatagiri sarees have been specifically identified under ODOP to showcase India's rich cultural diversity.
• These sarees have also been officially registered as a geographical indication under the Geographical Indications Act of 1999.
