Barytes & Barium Compounds

• Barytes, also known as barite, is a relatively soft crystalline mineral composed of barium sulfate.
• Around 80% of the global barytes production is dedicated to the oil and gas industry, particularly for oil drilling operations. It serves as a weighting agent in drilling mud to prevent the sudden release of gas and oil, ensuring safety.
• It possesses distinctive physical and chemical characteristics such as high density, significant specific gravity, chemical and physical stability, extremely low solubility, and lack of magnetic properties.
• Barium compounds find applications as fillers, extenders, and aggregates in various industries.
• When barytes is converted into barium carbonate, it becomes valuable in the production of ceramics and glass.

Resource Classification in India

• According to the United Nations Framework Classification for resources (UNFC) as of April 1, 2010, India possesses a total barytes resource amounting to 73 million tonnes.
• Of this total, 43% is categorized as reserved resources, while the remaining 57% constitutes additional resources.
• By quality grades, 40% of the resources are classified as suitable for oil-well drilling purposes, with 6% designated for chemical applications, 1% for paint production, and 33% deemed as low-grade resources.
• Approximately 20% of the resources fall under other, unclassified, or unidentified categories.
• Andhra Pradesh stands out as the primary contributor, holding 94% of the barytes resources in India.

Products Overview

• Natural barium sulphates are known as 'barytes', while natural barium carbonate is referred to as 'witherite'. 
• Barium compounds encompass substances like Barium Chloride, Barium Nitrate, and Barium Carbonate.

a. Barium Chloride

• Barium Chloride, an inorganic salt composed of barium cations (Ba₂) and chloride anions (BaCl), is also known as Barium Muriate or Barium dichloride. It appears as a white solid that is water-soluble, hygroscopic, and imparts a slight yellow-green hue to flames. The chemical formula for Barium Chloride is BaCl₂.
• The primary industrial use of BaCl₂ involves purifying brine solutions utilized in caustic chlorine plants. Additionally, it finds application in the casehardening of steel and the production of heat treatment salts. However, its use is limited due to its high toxicity.
• The industrial production of barium chloride involves a two-step process. Initially, barium sulphate (often in the form of the mineral barite) reacts with carbon at elevated temperatures to yield barium sulphide and carbon monoxide. Subsequently, treating the barium sulphide with hydrochloric acid results in the formation of barium chloride and hydrogen sulphide.

b. Barium Nitrate

• Ba (NO₃)₂ is an inorganic compound known as Barium nitrate. It is alternatively referred to as Barium dinitrate, Nitrobarite, or Barium salt. This chemical serves as a potent oxidizing agent, characterized by a green-colored flame when ignited. Widely utilized in pyrotechnics, it is vital in enhancing the combustion of flammable substances.
• Nitrobarite appears as a white crystalline solid, possessing non-combustible properties while intensifying the burning of combustible materials. Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may lead to its explosion.
• Barium nitrate finds diverse applications, including:
  • The manufacturing of barium oxide-based products.
  • Usage in producing green signal lights.
  • In the formulation of ceramic glazes.
  • Acting as a rodenticide.
  • In the creation of detonators, primers, and tracer bullets.
  • Utilization in paint production.
  • As an effective oxidizing agent.
  • In the manufacture of explosives.
  • For its role as a propellant and blowing agent.

c. Barium Carbonate

• Barium carbonate is a white solid derived from a solution of barium hydroxide and urea. Its chemical composition is BaCO₃. 
• Found in minerals like witherite or produced from barytes, this compound is toxic and often utilized in turquoise glazes. 
• Safety precautions are crucial due to its toxicity, with exposure levels needing to stay below 20%.

Applications of Barium Carbonate:

• Barium carbonate is extensively used in the glass, brick, oil-drilling, ceramics, photographic, and chemical sectors.
• It serves as a key ingredient for manufacturing barium oxide (BaO) and barium peroxide (BaO2).
• Notably, it functions as a rodenticide, resembling flour in appearance, which unfortunately has led to numerous cases of inadvertent barium poisoning.

Barium Chemicals for District as Export Hub:

• Geological survey reports indicate an abundant reserve of 74 million tons of barytes in the district.
• The barytes pulverizing industry is a prominent sector in close proximity to the district.
• The district is well-connected by both road and rail to ports, facilitating easy export processes.
