DISCOVERY OF CELL
? In 1665 Robert Hooke – an English Scientist, Saw Cells in a thin
slice of cork with his crude microscope.
? He observed as “Honey – comb” like Structure and named them
as CELLULAE or CELLS
? His discovery indicated for the first time that living organisms
consisted of number of small structures or units.

? Just as a building is made up of bricks the body of all living organisms
made up of cells.
? Basing on the cellular organization some organisms are made of single
cells “Unicellular Organisms” e.g. Chlamydomonas, Amoeba,
Paramecium
? Organisms which are made up of more than a cell “multicellular”
? Irrespective of unicellular or multicellular organisms the cells perform
similar basic functions for their survival.

FAQs on The Fundamental Unit of Life Class 9 PPT

1. What is a cell?
Ans. A cell is the fundamental unit of life. It is the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism that is capable of independent functioning. Cells can be found in all living organisms and are responsible for carrying out various biological processes.
2. How are cells classified?
Ans. Cells are classified into two major groups: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria, do not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. Eukaryotic cells, found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists, have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
3. What are the main components of a cell?
Ans. The main components of a cell include the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and genetic material. The cell membrane acts as a barrier and regulates the flow of substances in and out of the cell. The cytoplasm is a gel-like substance that fills the cell and contains various organelles. The genetic material, either DNA or RNA, carries the instructions for cell functioning.
4. How do cells obtain energy?
Ans. Cells obtain energy through a process called cellular respiration. In this process, cells break down glucose and other molecules to release energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells and in the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells.
5. What is the importance of cells in living organisms?
Ans. Cells are essential for the functioning and survival of living organisms. They carry out various functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli. Cells also specialize to form tissues, organs, and organ systems, allowing organisms to perform complex tasks and maintain homeostasis. Without cells, life as we know it would not be possible.
