FAQs on PPT: History Till 1934 - Crash Course for UPSC Aspirants

1. What events led to the formation of the United Nations in 1945?
Ans. The formation of the United Nations in 1945 was primarily influenced by the catastrophic events of World War II. The failure of the League of Nations to prevent the war and the need for a more effective international organization to maintain global peace and security were the key factors. Additionally, the Yalta Conference and the Dumbarton Oaks Conference played crucial roles in shaping the structure and principles of the United Nations.
2. How did the Treaty of Versailles contribute to the rise of Adolf Hitler and World War II?
Ans. The Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, imposed severe conditions on Germany after World War I. The treaty held Germany solely responsible for the war and imposed heavy reparations, territorial losses, and military restrictions. The harshness of the treaty and the economic hardships it caused in Germany fueled resentment and nationalism, creating a fertile ground for Adolf Hitler's rise to power. Hitler exploited these sentiments, promising to restore Germany's former glory, which eventually led to World War II.
3. What were the major causes of the Russian Revolution of 1917?
Ans. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was primarily caused by a combination of economic, social, and political factors. The harsh living conditions of the working class, widespread poverty, and inequality fueled discontent among the masses. Additionally, Russia's involvement in World War I, military defeats, and food shortages further aggravated the situation. The autocratic rule of Tsar Nicholas II, his weak leadership, and the influence of revolutionary ideologies also played a significant role in sparking the revolution.
4. How did the Industrial Revolution impact society and the economy in the 18th and 19th centuries?
Ans. The Industrial Revolution, which began in the 18th century, brought about significant changes in society and the economy. It marked the shift from an agrarian-based economy to one based on industrial production and mechanization. This led to the growth of factories, urbanization, and the rise of the working class. The Industrial Revolution also brought advancements in technology, transportation, and communication, enhancing productivity and trade. However, it also resulted in social inequalities, poor working conditions, and environmental degradation.
5. What were the main factors leading to the Great Depression of 1929?
Ans. The Great Depression of 1929 was primarily caused by a combination of economic factors. The stock market crash of 1929 triggered a sharp decline in stock prices and investor confidence, leading to a collapse of the global financial system. This was exacerbated by overproduction, unequal distribution of wealth, and high levels of debt. Additionally, protectionist trade policies, such as tariffs, worsened the economic downturn by reducing international trade. The Great Depression had severe consequences, including mass unemployment, bank failures, and a prolonged period of economic recession.
