Learning Outcomes
Some solids like salt and sugar are soluble
in water. Their molecules spread themselves
between the molecules of water.
Some liquids like milk, glycerine and
lemon juice also dissolve in water.
The liquids that mix with each other
are called m i s c i b l e liquids. Liquids like
oil and kerosene that do not dissolve in ‘
water are called i m m i s c i b l e liquids.

Solids, Liquids and Gases in
Water
Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and
nitrogen can dissolve in water.
Aquatic animals breathe oxygen,
while aquatic plants use dissolved
carbon dioxide for food. Carbon
dioxide is dissolved in soft drinks to
create fizziness. When water is
boiled, dissolved gases form
bubbles that separate from the
water.
