What is symmetry ? Line symmetry
? A figure can have different types of symmetry, which we
shall discuss in this chapter.
? A figure is said to have 'line symmetry' if it the figure can
be divided into two equal and same parts along a line. The
line that divides it into two equal halves is called as “Line
of Symmetry”

Line symmetry
? A figure can have no line of symmetry, a single line of
symmetry or even multiple lines of symmetry.
? For example, a curved figure has no line of symmetry.

FAQs on PPT: Symmetry - Mathematics for Grade 6

1. What is symmetry?
Ans. Symmetry is a concept in mathematics that refers to a balanced arrangement of objects or figures on either side of a line or a point. It is a property where one part of an object or a figure is a mirror image of the other part.
2. How can we identify symmetrical objects?
Ans. To identify symmetrical objects, we can use various methods. One common method is the line of symmetry test, where we draw a line and check if both sides of the object or figure are mirror images of each other. Another method is the rotational symmetry test, where we rotate the object or figure and check if it looks the same at different angles.
3. What are the types of symmetry?
Ans. There are three main types of symmetry: reflectional symmetry, rotational symmetry, and translational symmetry. Reflectional symmetry refers to objects or figures that have a line of symmetry, making one part a mirror image of the other. Rotational symmetry refers to objects or figures that can be rotated to a certain degree and still appear the same. Translational symmetry refers to objects or figures that can be shifted or translated without changing their overall appearance.
4. How is symmetry used in real-life applications?
Ans. Symmetry is used in various real-life applications. In architecture, symmetry is often used to create visually pleasing and balanced structures. It is also used in art and design to create aesthetically pleasing compositions. In nature, many organisms exhibit symmetry, such as butterflies and flowers. Symmetry is also utilized in fields like computer graphics, where it helps in creating realistic and visually appealing 3D models.
5. Can symmetry be found in non-living objects?
Ans. Yes, symmetry can be found in non-living objects as well. Many man-made objects, such as buildings, furniture, and vehicles, are designed with symmetrical patterns or shapes. Even everyday objects like mirrors and books exhibit reflectional symmetry. Symmetry is a fundamental concept that can be observed in various aspects of our surroundings, both living and non-living.
