Q1: On October 12, 1492 (the first day he encountered the native people of the Americas), Columbus wrote in his journal: "They should be good servants .... I, our Lord being pleased, will take hence, at the time of my departure, six natives for your Highnesses." These captives were later paraded through the streets of Barcelona and Seville when Columbus returned to Spain From his very first contact with native people, Columbus had their domination in mind. For example, on October 14, 1492, Columbus wrote in his journal, "with fifty men they can all be subjugated and made to do what is required of them." These were not mere words: after his second voyage, Columbus sent back a consignment of natives to be sold as slaves Yet in an April 1493, letter to Luis de Santangel (a patron who helped fund the first voyage), Columbus made clear that the people he encountered had done nothing to deserve ill-treatment.

Q2: One of the most important things to remember is that "classic" does not necessarily translate to "favorite" or "bestselling". Literature is instead considered classic when it has stood the test of time; and it stands the test of time when the artistic quality it expresses – be it an expression of life, truth, beauty, or anything about the universal human condition – continues to be relevant, and continues to inspire emotional responses, no matter the period in which the work was written. Indeed, classic literature is considered as such regardless of book sales or public popularity. That said, classic literature usually merits lasting recognition – from critics and other people in a position to influence such decisions – and has a universal appeal. And, while effective use of language – as well as technical excellence – is a must, not everything that is well-written or is characterized by technical achievement or critical acclaim will automatically be considered a classic. Conversely, works that have not been acknowledged or received positively by the writer's contemporaries or critics can still be considered classics.

While tourism may have its disadvantages, it also brings substantial advantages to underdeveloped countries. I firmly believe the positive impacts far outweigh the drawbacks.

One significant advantage of tourism is its economic impact. In underdeveloped countries, tourism can be a vital source of revenue, creating job opportunities and fostering local businesses. For example, in my own country, a small town with rich cultural heritage experienced a boost in its economy when tourists started visiting, to explore historical sites and traditional crafts. This influx of visitors generated income for local artisans and entrepreneurs, leading to the overall development of the community.

Moreover, tourism facilitates cultural exchange and understanding between visitors and locals. Exposure to different cultures promotes tolerance and appreciation for diversity. Tourists often engage with local traditions, cuisines, and customs, contributing to mutual understanding. In my experience, a friend from an underdeveloped region shared how interacting with tourists in her community allowed her to learn about various cultures, broadening her perspective and fostering cross-cultural friendships.

While it is true that tourism can lead to environmental degradation and disrupt local lifestyles, effective management strategies and responsible tourism practices can mitigate these negative effects. By promoting sustainable tourism, underdeveloped countries can harness the benefits of tourism without compromising their natural and cultural resources.

In conclusion, despite the disadvantages, the economic and cultural advantages of tourism make it a valuable asset for underdeveloped countries. With careful planning and sustainable practices, tourism can be a catalyst for positive change, fostering economic growth and cross-cultural understanding.
