Passage

The correlation between drug addiction and criminal behavior is well-known, and it is common for individuals to enter prison already addicted to drugs. Therefore, the focus of treatment in these cases is not only on helping individuals overcome their drug addiction but also on reducing criminal behavior after their release. To enhance the existing treatment options, one prison decided to introduce additional elements to traditional addiction psychotherapy. They provided three different types of treatment and conducted an investigation to determine if these treatments had varying long-term outcomes.

The first treatment involved combining psychotherapy and medication during the individuals' incarceration as well as after their release on parole. The second treatment involved psychotherapy during incarceration and medication only after release on parole. The third treatment involved psychotherapy during incarceration and a referral to a clinic where individuals could choose to receive medication after their release. After one year of participants being released from prison, researchers contacted them to determine the percentage of individuals in each treatment condition who had relapsed into drug abuse. Table 1 presents the percentages of people addicted to each drug one year after their release from prison for each treatment condition.
