Soil Properties

Q1:  For Sand Of Uniform Spherical Particles, The Void Ratios In The Loosest And The Densest States Are _____ And _____ Respectively.       [GATE 1991: 2 Marks]
Ans:
0.91, 0.35
Sol:
In loosest state, the soil particles are arranged in a cubical array in which each soil particle is surrounded by 6 soil particles.

Volume of Spherical soil particle = (d/2)3 x 4π / 3

Assume the cube side as   1 x 1 x 1 unit.
Total volume = 1 cubic unit.
The number of spherical particles in 1 cubic unit is   1/d x 1/d x 1/d =1 / d3

Thus, Volume of soil solids = Volume of single soil particle x number of particles

Thus void ratio in loosest state,

Similarly, in densest state, the soil particles are arranged in a rhombohedral array in which each soil particle is surrounded by 12 soil particles.
The volume of soil solids remains constant.
Thus, Volume of soil solids,

Vsoil = π/6 = 0.523
Total volume, V = (1 - cos α)√(1 + 2 cos α)
Here, α = 360° / 12
= 60°
⇒ V = 0.707 m3
Now, Volume of voids, Vvoids = V - Vsoil
⇒ Vvoids = 0.707 - 0.523
⇒ Vvoids = 0.184 m3

Thus void ratio in densest state,
emin = Vvoids / Vsoil
⇒ emin = 0.184 / 0.523

⇒ emin = 0.35

FAQs on Previous Year Questions: Soil Mechanics - Soil Mechanics - Civil Engineering (CE)

1. What is soil mechanics in civil engineering?
Ans. Soil mechanics is a branch of civil engineering that deals with the study of soil behavior, properties, and its interaction with structures. It involves understanding the physical, mechanical, and hydraulic properties of soil to design and construct safe and stable structures on or in the ground.
2. What are the common tests conducted in soil mechanics?
Ans. Several tests are conducted in soil mechanics to determine the properties and behavior of soil. Some common tests include the sieve analysis to determine the particle size distribution, the Atterberg limits test to determine the moisture content and plasticity of soil, and the compaction test to assess the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of soil.
3. How does soil mechanics influence foundation design?
Ans. Soil mechanics plays a crucial role in foundation design as it helps engineers understand the characteristics of the soil beneath a structure. By studying the soil properties, engineers can determine the foundation type, size, and depth required to support the structure safely. Factors such as soil bearing capacity, settlement, and lateral resistance are considered during foundation design.
4. What is the significance of soil compaction in soil mechanics?
Ans. Soil compaction is a key aspect of soil mechanics as it influences the strength, stability, and permeability of soil. Compacting soil increases its density, reducing its porosity and improving its load-bearing capacity. Proper compaction ensures that the soil has sufficient strength to support structures, prevents excessive settlement, and reduces the potential for water infiltration.
5. How does soil mechanics help in slope stability analysis?
Ans. Soil mechanics provides the necessary tools and techniques to analyze the stability of slopes. By considering factors such as soil type, slope geometry, and groundwater conditions, engineers can assess the potential for slope failure and design appropriate stabilization measures. Soil mechanics principles help in determining the shear strength of soil and evaluating the stability of slopes under different loading and environmental conditions.
