FAQs on Ex-7.3, Decimals, Class 6, Maths RD Sharma Solutions - RD Sharma Solutions for Class 6 Mathematics

1. What are the different types of decimals?
Ans. There are three types of decimals - terminating decimals, repeating decimals, and non-terminating non-repeating decimals. Terminating decimals are those decimals that end after a finite number of digits, such as 0.5 or 0.25. Repeating decimals are decimals that have a repeating pattern of digits after the decimal point, such as 0.3333... or 0.1818... Non-terminating non-repeating decimals are decimals that do not end and do not have a repeating pattern, such as π (pi) or √2 (square root of 2).
2. How do you convert a fraction into a decimal?
Ans. To convert a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator (top number) of the fraction by the denominator (bottom number). The result will be the decimal form of the fraction. For example, to convert 3/4 into a decimal, divide 3 by 4, which gives 0.75.
3. What is the significance of place value in decimals?
Ans. Place value is an important concept in decimals as it determines the value of each digit in a decimal number. In a decimal number, the digits to the left of the decimal point represent whole numbers, while the digits to the right of the decimal point represent fractions or parts of a whole. Each digit's position in the number determines its place value, with the digit on the right having the smallest place value and the digit on the left having the largest place value.
4. How can you compare decimals?
Ans. To compare decimals, start by comparing the digit in the leftmost place value. If the digits are the same, move to the next place value to the right and compare again. Continue this process until a difference is found or all digits have been compared. If the digits are the same up to a certain point and one decimal has additional digits, the decimal with the additional digits is greater. For example, to compare 0.12 and 0.123, compare the digit in the tenths place first (1 vs 1), then the digit in the hundredths place (2 vs 2), and finally the digit in the thousandths place (0 vs 3). Since 0.123 has a greater digit in the thousandths place, it is greater than 0.12.
5. How do you round decimals to a given place value?
Ans. To round decimals to a given place value, look at the digit to the right of the desired place value. If this digit is 5 or greater, round the digit in the desired place value up by 1. If the digit is less than 5, leave the digit in the desired place value as it is. Then, replace all digits to the right of the desired place value with zeros. For example, to round 3.768 to the nearest hundredth, look at the digit in the thousandths place (8). Since 8 is greater than 5, round the digit in the hundredths place (6) up by 1, resulting in 3.77.
