PAGE NO 5.9:

Question 1:Draw a number line and represent each of the following on it:

(i) 5+(−2)5+-2

(ii) (−9)+4-9+4

(iii) (−3)+(−5)-3+-5

(iv) 6+(−6)6+-6

(v) (−1)+(−2)+2-1+-2+2

(vi) (−2)+7+(−9)

ANSWER: (i) If we start from 5 and move 2 units to the left of 5, we will obtain 3, as shown on the number.

FAQs on Page No.5.9, Negative Numbers And Integers, Class 6, Maths RD Sharma Solutions - RD Sharma Solutions for Class 6 Mathematics

1. What are negative numbers and integers?
Ans. Negative numbers are numbers less than zero, represented by a negative sign (-) in front of the number. Integers, on the other hand, include both positive and negative whole numbers, including zero.
2. How are negative numbers and integers used in daily life?
Ans. Negative numbers and integers are used in various real-life scenarios, such as measuring temperatures below zero, calculating debts or losses, determining distances in opposite directions, and analyzing financial transactions.
3. Can negative numbers and integers be represented on a number line?
Ans. Yes, negative numbers and integers can be represented on a number line. Positive numbers are placed to the right of zero, while negative numbers are placed to the left of zero. The distance from zero indicates the magnitude of the number.
4. How do we perform operations like addition and subtraction with negative numbers and integers?
Ans. To add or subtract negative numbers and integers, we follow the rules of sign. If both numbers have the same sign, we add their magnitudes and keep the sign the same. If the signs are different, we subtract the smaller magnitude from the larger magnitude and keep the sign of the number with the larger magnitude.
5. How do negative numbers and integers relate to real-world situations?
Ans. Negative numbers and integers are used to represent real-world situations where quantities can be both positive and negative. For example, when tracking changes in stock prices, calculating gains and losses in business, or analyzing changes in temperature, we use negative numbers and integers to accurately represent these scenarios.
