Introduction

The Sirmaur Satyagraha was a significant movement in the fight for rights and justice in the princely state of Sirmaur. It began after 1920, when political awakening started to rise in the region, influenced by the revolutionary activities in neighboring Punjab.

Formation of Sirmaur Praja Mandal (1939)

• Chaudhary Sherjang formed a secret organization that laid the foundation for political activism in Sirmaur.
• In 1939, the Sirmaur Praja Mandal was officially formed with key leaders including Chaudhary Sherjang, Shivanand Ramul, Devendra Singh, Nahar Singh, Nagindra Singh, and Harish Chandra.

Opposition to Misrule

• The Sirmaur Praja Mandal gained popularity and led a rebellion against the misrule of the king, Rana, and the British government.
• The government, feeling threatened, fabricated charges against the Praja Mandal leaders to suppress the movement.

False Accusations

• The government accused several leaders of the Praja Mandal of:
  1. Plotting to murder the king.
  2. Throwing stones at the king with the intent to kill.
• Those accused included Shri Devinder Singh, Harish Chandra, Nahar Singh, and Jagbandhan Singh.

Legal Battle

• Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the Sessions Judge, acquitted the accused. 
• However, the authorities, angered by this verdict, took the case to a Special Tribunal, where the charges were proven against the accused.

Pajhota Movement (1942)

• Inspired by the Quit India Movement, the Sirmaur Praja Mandal started the Pajhota Movement in October 1942, spreading across the region.
• The main leaders of this movement were Surat Singh Vaid, Sunhari Devi (wife of Surat Singh), Matha Ram, Atma Devi (wife of Matha Ram), Daya Ram, Sita Ram Sharma, and Shiva Nand Ramoul.
• Other key figures included Gulab Singh, Mian Chu-Chu, Mehar Singh, Attar Singh, Jali Singh, and Madan Singh.

Establishment of Sirmour Association and Praja Mandal (1944)

• In 1944, the leaders of the movement established the Sirmour Association and the Sirmour Riyasati Praja Mandal, continuing the struggle for the rights of the common people.

Outcome

• The Satyagraha and other movements in Sirmaur culminated in the merger of Sirmaur with Himachal Pradesh in 1948, finally bringing an end to the oppression and misrule in the region.
