FAQs on Solved Practice Questions on LiAlH4, NaBh4 & grignard reagent - Organic Chemistry

1. What is the purpose of LiAlH4?
Ans. LiAlH4, also known as lithium aluminum hydride, is a powerful reducing agent commonly used in organic chemistry. It is used to reduce carbonyl compounds, such as aldehydes, ketones, esters, and carboxylic acids, to their corresponding alcohols.
2. Can NaBH4 be used as a substitute for LiAlH4?
Ans. While both LiAlH4 and NaBH4 are reducing agents, they have different reactivities. NaBH4 is milder and less reactive compared to LiAlH4. It is generally used for the reduction of aldehydes and ketones but cannot reduce carboxylic acids or esters. So, NaBH4 cannot be used as a substitute for LiAlH4 in all cases.
3. How is a Grignard reagent prepared?
Ans. Grignard reagents are prepared by reacting an alkyl or aryl halide with magnesium metal. The reaction takes place in anhydrous (water-free) conditions using an ether solvent, such as diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran (THF). The halogen atom of the alkyl or aryl halide is replaced by a magnesium atom, forming the Grignard reagent.
4. What are the applications of Grignard reagents?
Ans. Grignard reagents are versatile compounds used in organic synthesis. Some common applications include the formation of new carbon-carbon bonds, such as the synthesis of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and tertiary alcohols. They are also used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and natural products.
5. Can LiAlH4 and Grignard reagents be used interchangeably?
Ans. No, LiAlH4 and Grignard reagents cannot be used interchangeably. LiAlH4 is mainly used for the reduction of carbonyl compounds, while Grignard reagents are used for the formation of new carbon-carbon bonds. While both reagents are powerful and versatile, their reactivities and reaction conditions differ, making them suitable for different types of reactions.
