Introduction

Karnataka has a rich cultural heritage of traditional games, with a wide variety of indoor, outdoor, and board games that were once enjoyed by both young and old alike. However, with the rise of computers, mobile phones, and gaming consoles, the nature of gaming has changed significantly in the state, as it has in the rest of the country. While a few traditional games are still played, especially in rural areas, many people in urban regions have become disconnected from these cultural pastimes. 

Sports of Karnataka

Chinni Dandu (Gilli Danda)

• Gilli Danda is a popular outdoor game played across India and South Asia. In Kannada, it is known as  Chinni Dandu  . 
• The game is believed to be the origin of several European and American games, such as Cricket, Baseball, and Softball. 
• Gilli Danda is played with two wooden pieces: a peg (gilli) and a stick (danda). The stick is used to strike the peg. 
• It is a team game that requires  hand-eye coordination  and concentration from the players. 

Buguri (Spinning the top)

• Spinning the top, also known as Lattu, is a traditional and enjoyable game played in various regions of  India and Pakistan. In  Kannada, it is called Buguri. 
• The game involves a wooden top that is spun using a string. The top has grooves in its lower half and a nail at the bottom, which allows it to spin smoothly. 
• Players wrap the string around the grooves and then pull the string to deploy the top, making it spin rapidly. 

Goti (Marbles)

• Goti, also known as marbles, kancha, or goli, is a popular gully sport in India. 
• The game involves players trying to hit a selected target marble using their own marble ball. 
• Players compete to win by knocking out their opponents' marbles, showcasing skills like aiming and concentration. 
• The winner collects all the marbles from the other players. 

Kabaddi

• Kabbadi is a traditional  team sport  that originated in ancient  India  . 
• Two teams occupy opposite halves of an enclosed area. 
• Each team takes turns sending a  raider  into the opposing team's half. 
• The raider's objective is to tag members of the opposing team while chanting  "kabaddi". 
• The raider must return to their side of the enclosure after the raid without being tackled. 
• Kabaddi is widely played not only in India but also in countries like  Bangladesh  and the  Maldives. 

Kallu Gundu Ettuvudu (Stone Balls)

• Kallu Gundu Ettuvudu, also known as Kallata, is a traditional outdoor sport from rural Karnataka, India. 
• The sport involves participants lifting round stone balls, called Kallu Gundu in Kannada, which vary in size and weight. 
• Physical strength is crucial for players, as they need to lift heavy stones with varying weights. 

Pagade

• Pagade is a traditional cross and circle board game, similar to the ancient games of Pachisi or Chaupad. 
• The objective of the game is for 2 to 4 players to race their pawns to the innermost square of the board. 
• The game's origins date back to the 4th century AD, and it has remained popular throughout history. 

Chowka Bara (Chakaara)

• Chauka Bara is among the oldest board games in India, still played in various regions of the country. 
• In Mysuru, the game is known as  Chowka Bara, while in north Karnataka, it is called  Chakaara  or  Chakka. 
• This game, similar to Ludo, can be played by four players and is based on chance. 
• Players use cowry shells, known as  kavade  in Kannada, to race their pawns from the starting point to the safety of home. 
• Chauka Bara helps improve eye-to-eye coordination and teaches strategic thinking. 

Ashtapada

• Ashtapada is an ancient Indian board game that predates chess. 
• Board: The game is played on an 8x8 grid board with squares of the same color and special markings called "castles." 
• Objective: Players aim to move their pieces around the board in a clockwise direction, enter the castle, and then return the piece to the castle in a counter-clockwise direction to reach the center of the board. 
• Players:  Ashtapada can be played by 2 or 4 players. 

Paramapada (Snakes & Ladders)

• Origin: Snakes and Ladders is a traditional board game that originated in ancient India, where it is known as Paramapada  in Kannada. 
• Players: The game can be played by two or more players. 
• Game Board: The game board consists of numbered, gridded squares, along with illustrated ladders and snakes. 
• Objective: Players aim to move their game piece from the start to the finish based on the rolls of a die. 
• Mechanics: Landing on a ladder allows a player to advance more quickly, while landing on a snake hinders their progress. 

Ali Guli Mane

• Ali Guli Mane, also known as Channe Mane, is a traditional indoor board game from Karnataka. 
• The game is typically played by two players on a wooden board featuring 14 pits. 
• Players use 70 tamarind seeds or cowry shells as counters to keep score. 
• Playing Ali Guli Mane helps develop important skills such as logic, hand-eye coordination, and concentration. 

Lagori (Seven Stones) 

•  Lagori is a traditional Indian game played with a stack of stones, a ball, and a focused eye. 
•  Popular in North and East India: The game is particularly popular in the northern and eastern states of India, where it is known by various names such as pittu, lingochi, and palli patti. 
•  Gaining Popularity in Mangalore: Lagori is becoming increasingly popular in Mangalore, especially among the youth, and is often seen as a common outdoor activity. 
•  Basic Concept: The game involves two opposing teams and a pile of flat stones. One player from a team throws the ball at the stone pile to disrupt it and then runs away. 
•  Objective: The opposing team tries to catch the ball and hit the players of the throwing team while they attempt to rebuild the stone stack without getting tagged. 
•  Lagori is an inexpensive and easy-to-follow game, making it accessible and enjoyable for players of all ages. 

Adu Huli Aata (Tiger & Goat)

• Adu Huli Aata, known as Tiger and Goat, is a traditional hunt game from Karnataka, India. 
• The game involves strategy and concentration, where tigers try to capture goats, and goats aim to trap tigers. 
• One player controls 3 tigers, while the other controls 15 goats. 
• Tigers:  The tiger's goal is to eliminate goats by landing on the same square as them. 
• Goats:  Goats must try to surround and immobilize the tigers to win the game. 
• Both players need to think ahead and plan their moves carefully to outsmart their opponent. 
• The game emphasizes tactical thinking and the ability to anticipate the opponent's moves. 

Saalu Mane Ata (Nine Men’s Morris)

• Nine Men's Morris is a traditional board game that originated in the western world. 
• In Kannada, it is known as Saalu Mane Ata, Jodpi Ata, or Char-Par. In various parts of India, it is popular as Navakankari. 
• Players and Objective:  The game requires 2 players, each player is given 9 coins, and the objective is to score points by getting 3 coins in a row on the game board. 
• Complexity and Strategy:  Nine Men's Morris is a complex game that demands strategic thinking and planning. 

Kunte Bille (Hopscotch)

• Hopscotch is a traditional game played by children, known as  Kunte Bille  in Kannada. 
• The game can be enjoyed by a single player or multiple players. 
• Players draw a court on the ground, divided into numbered rectangles. 
• A small object is tossed into one of the numbered rectangles. 
• The player then hops or jumps through the spaces to retrieve the object. 

Kambala (Buffalo Race)

• Kambala, also known as the Buffalo Race, is a popular rural sport in Karnataka,  India  . 
• In this traditional event, farmers race their buffaloes through tracks ploughed into muddy fields. 
• The fields are made slushy and slippery by adding water, creating a challenging and exciting environment for the race. 
• Kambala is not just a competition; it is a source of great enjoyment and entertainment for the rural communities of Karnataka. 

Hagga Jaggata (Tug of War) 

• Tug of war, also known as rope pulling, is a historical sport called Hagga Jaggata in Kannada. 
• The sport involves two teams pulling on opposite ends of a rope, testing their strength against each other. 
• The goal is to pull the rope in such a way that one team drags the other across a central line marked on the ground. 

Naaku Kallu Aata (Four Stone)

• The Four Stone game, known as  Naaku Kallu Aata  in Karnataka, is an ancient traditional game. 
• Players draw four independent boxes on the ground. 
• Each player stands in one of the boxes. 
• Players must try to collect four stones placed at the center of the boxes. 
• Players must avoid being caught by the chaser during the game. 

Hand Wrestling

• Hand wrestling is a popular and enthusiastic game played by the people in rural Karnataka. 
• The game involves two players who use their hands to compete against each other. 
• One player must grip the opponent's hand tightly under the wrist joint with both hands and fingers. 
• The goal is to prevent the opponent from escaping your grip on their hand. 
• When it's the player's turn, they must try to free their own hand from the opponent's clutch. 

Conclusion

Many other games have also played a significant role in the state's rich history, but today, most of them are fading from memory.
