In the village where Squire Trelawney, a nobleman, resides, a young boy named Jim Hawkins finds a treasure map once belonging to a pirate. Excited by the prospect of adventure, Squire Trelawney hires a ship and invites Jim and Dr. Livesey, the local doctor, to embark on a treasure hunt. As they journey towards the island indicated on the map, Jim encounters a mysterious figure following him.
Once upon a time, a young boy named Jim Hawkins found a secret pirate map. A kind and rich man named Squire Trelawney decided to help Jim look for the treasure shown on the map. They set sail on a big ship with Dr. Livesey and some other people.
One day, they reached the island where the treasure was hidden. Jim was exploring the island when suddenly, rocks started rolling down a hill. He saw a shadowy figure moving from tree to tree. Jim was scared because he couldn’t tell if it was a man or an animal. It seemed dark and hairy, and it ran very fast on two legs.
Jim decided to stop running and face the figure. He took out his pistol, ready to protect himself. To his surprise, the figure turned out to be a man! The man looked very different because he had been on the island for a long time. He fell to his knees and looked like he was asking for mercy.
The man introduced himself as Ben Gunn. He told Jim that he had been living alone on the island for three years after his shipmates left him there. Ben Gunn's skin was dark because of the sun, and he had long white hair and beard. His clothes were just old rags held together with strings.
Ben Gunn was very hungry and asked Jim if he had any cheese because he missed eating real food. Jim felt sorry for Ben Gunn and promised to bring him cheese if he could get back to the ship. Ben Gunn was worried about who might be stopping Jim from returning to the ship. Jim assured him that it wasn’t him, and they started talking more.
Ben Gunn shared that he used to live a rough life but was raised well by his good mother. He regretted his past actions and hoped to live a better life if he ever left the island. He even whispered to Jim that he was rich with treasure and promised to share it with him.
Jim explained their current situation to Ben Gunn. Their ship was taken over by some of the pirate Flint’s old crew, and the leader was Long John Silver, a man with one leg. Ben Gunn was scared at first but then decided to trust Jim. He offered his help to Jim to escape the dangerous situation.
Ben Gunn then asked Jim if Squire Trelawney would reward him with some money and help him get back home if he helped them. Jim believed that Squire Trelawney would definitely help because he was a generous man.
Ben Gunn showed Jim a boat he had made by himself, which they could use to get back to the ship. Just then, they heard the ship's cannon, signaling a fight had started. They ran towards the bay, and soon they saw the English flag flying high above the trees. Ben Gunn decided to stay back, but he told Jim where he could find him if needed.
Jim thanked Ben Gunn and ran fast towards the flag, hoping to rejoin his friends and share the news about Ben Gunn and the possible treasure.
That's how Jim met Ben Gunn, the marooned man who lived alone on the treasure island but was rich with secrets and hopes of a better future. Jim learned a lot from Ben Gunn and hoped to help him just as Ben Gunn was ready to help Jim and his friends.
The chapter highlights themes of survival, redemption, and trust. Ben Gunn's tale of solitary survival underscores the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. His desire for redemption reflects the theme of second chances and the possibility of transformation. Additionally, the bond of trust between Jim and Ben Gunn illustrates the importance of loyalty and friendship in challenging circumstances.
