| 1. What is UGC NET and when is the exam conducted? |  |
Ans. UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) is a national level exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). It determines the eligibility of candidates for the role of Assistant Professor and the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The exam is usually conducted twice a year, in the months of June and December.
| 2. What is the eligibility criteria for UGC NET? | |
Ans. To be eligible for UGC NET, a candidate must have a master's degree or its equivalent in a relevant subject from a recognized university or institution. The minimum qualifying marks for general candidates are 55% in the qualifying examination. However, there is a relaxation of 5% for candidates belonging to reserved categories such as SC/ST/OBC/PWD/transgender.

Ans. UGC NET consists of two papers - Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is common for all candidates and tests their teaching/research aptitude, reasoning ability, comprehension, and general awareness. Paper 2 is based on the subject chosen by the candidate and assesses their in-depth knowledge in that particular subject. Both papers are conducted in a computer-based mode and consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

Ans. The qualifying criteria for UGC NET are as follows:
- For the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and eligibility for Assistant Professor, the candidate must secure the minimum qualifying marks in both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
- The qualifying marks for general category candidates are 40% aggregate in both papers.
- For reserved category candidates (SC/ST/OBC/PWD/transgender), the qualifying marks are 35% aggregate in both papers.
- The final merit list is prepared based on the candidate's performance in both papers, and the top 6% of candidates are declared eligible for Assistant Professorship.
