1. What is a fraction?

Ans. A fraction represents a part of a whole or a number that is not a whole number. It is composed of two numbers, namely the numerator and the denominator, separated by a horizontal line. The numerator represents the number of parts we have, while the denominator represents the total number of equal parts in a whole.

2. How do I read a fraction?

Ans. To read a fraction, we say the numerator as an ordinal number and the denominator as a cardinal number. For example, the fraction 3/4 is read as "three-fourths" or "three over four". Similarly, 1/2 is read as "one-half" or "one over two".

3. How do I compare fractions?

Ans. To compare fractions, we need to find a common denominator for both fractions. Once we have a common denominator, we can compare the numerators. The fraction with the greater numerator is the greater fraction. If the numerators are equal, we compare the denominators. The fraction with the smaller denominator is the greater fraction.

4. How do I add or subtract fractions?

Ans. To add or subtract fractions, we need to have a common denominator. If the denominators are already the same, we can simply add or subtract the numerators. If the denominators are different, we need to find a common denominator by finding the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators. Once we have a common denominator, we can add or subtract the numerators and keep the common denominator unchanged.

5. Can fractions be simplified?

Ans. Yes, fractions can be simplified. If the numerator and denominator have a common factor, we can divide both by that common factor to simplify the fraction. Simplified fractions have the smallest possible numerator and denominator, making them easier to work with.
