1. What are fractions?

Ans. Fractions are numbers that represent a part of a whole. They consist of a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number) separated by a fraction line. For example, in the fraction 3/4, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator. It represents that we have 3 parts out of 4 equal parts.

2. How do you add fractions?

Ans. To add fractions, we need to have a common denominator. If the denominators are already the same, we can simply add the numerators. For example, to add 1/4 and 3/4, we add the numerators (1 + 3 = 4) and keep the denominator the same (4). So, the sum is 4/4. If the denominators are different, we need to find a common denominator. We can do this by finding the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators. Once we have a common denominator, we can add the fractions by adding the numerators and keeping the denominator the same.

3. How do you subtract fractions?

Ans. To subtract fractions, we also need a common denominator. If the denominators are the same, we can simply subtract the numerators. For example, to subtract 2/5 from 3/5, we subtract the numerators (3 - 2 = 1) and keep the denominator the same (5). So, the difference is 1/5. If the denominators are different, we follow the same steps as in adding fractions. Find a common denominator, subtract the numerators, and keep the denominator the same.

4. How do you multiply fractions?

Ans. To multiply fractions, we simply multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. For example, to multiply 2/3 and 4/5, we multiply the numerators (2 * 4 = 8) and multiply the denominators (3 * 5 = 15). So, the product is 8/15. If there are whole numbers involved, we can convert them to fractions by putting them over 1 and then multiply.

5. How do you divide fractions?

Ans. To divide fractions, we need to multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. The reciprocal of a fraction is obtained by flipping the numerator and denominator. For example, to divide 2/3 by 4/5, we multiply 2/3 by 5/4 (reciprocal of 4/5). This gives us (2/3) * (5/4) = 10/12. We can simplify this fraction by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, which in this case is 2. So, the simplified result is 5/6.
