Important News – India

1. In June 2021, India has been elected as a member of which UN body for three-year terms of 2022-24 __________ Economic and Social Council.

➢ India was elected to the 54-member ECOSOC, by the UNGA on June 7, 2021, in the Asia-Pacific States category, along with Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Oman.
➢ ECOSOC serves as the central platform for discussing international economic, social and environmental issues and formulating policy recommendations addressed to member states and the United Nations system.

2. The NITI Aayog and which philanthropic foundation have launched ‘Surakshit Hum Surakshit Tum Abhiyaan’ to provide home-care support to asymptomatic covid-19 patients or patients with mild symptoms __________ Piramal Foundation.

➢ The Foundation which has been working in 25 districts helping in COVID care to senior citizens since last year has now expanded its scope of work to 112 backward districts called “Aspirational Districts’.
➢ Both entities unveiled ‘Surakshit Hum Surakshit Tum Abhiyaan’ which will be rolled out in these 112 districts to assist the district administrations in providing home-care support to patients who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.

➢ India is third overall in terms of representation, behind Japan (116 universities) and Mainland China (91).
➢ While Indian Institute of Science (37th) remains the country’s highest ranked university for the seventh year in a row, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (55th) and Indian Institute of Technology Indore (78th) have also made it to the top 100 this year.
➢ Of the 49 Indian universities appearing in the rankings for at least a second consecutive year, 51% have maintained or improved on their 2020 rankings.

4. According to the coveted QS World University Rankings 2022, which Indian institution is the world's top research university as per the citations per faculty indicator _________ Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

➢ Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi remained the three universities from India to rank in the top-200 positions in the latest Rankings.
➢ As per the rankings, IIT Bombay for securing 177th position , IIT Delhi for securing 185th rank and IISc Bengaluru for securing 186th position in overall university rankings globally.
➢ The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is the world's top research university as per the citations per faculty indicator, while the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, is ranked 41st in the category.

5. Which institution is India's top ranked institution for the fourth consecutive year at the QS World University Rankings 2022 _________ IIT Bombay.

➢ Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi remained the three universities from India to rank in the top-200 positions in the latest Rankings.
➢ As per the rankings, IIT Bombay for securing 177th position , IIT Delhi for securing 185th rank and IISc Bengaluru for securing 186th position in overall university rankings globally.
➢ According to the 18th edition of the rankings, the India Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, is India's top ranked institution for the fourth consecutive year at the QS World University Rankings 2022.

6. According to the all-India survey on higher education (AISHE) 2019-20 released by the union education ministry the number of institutions of national importance have increased to __________ 135.

➢ Union Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ released the report of All India Survey on Higher Education 2019-20.

➢ There has been a growth of 11.4% in the student enrolment in five years.
➢ The rise in female enrolment in higher education during the period is 18.2%.
➢ Number of institutions of national importance have increased to 135 in 2020 from 75 in 2015.

➢ I-Familia has three components: a dedicated global database to host the DNA profiles provided by relatives, held separately from any criminal data; DNA matching software called Bonaparte, developed by Dutch company Smart Research; and interpretation guidelines developed by Interpol.
