a flame is a dance a continuous chemical
reaction the light you see and the heat
you feel are produced by collisions of
tiny particles like everything else in
the world candle wax is made of tiny
particles called atoms the wax that
creeps up a candles wick is full of
carbon and hydrogen atoms the air around
it is full of oxygen atoms normally none
of these atoms are moving around very
fast but when you bring a source of heat
near the candle like the lit match the
atoms start racing around and crashing
into each other even tinier particles
called electrons spin around atoms
sometimes when atoms from the wax and
air crash into each other they start
sharing their electrons and stick
together as one larger molecule these
collisions release energy in the form of
heat and light which we call a flame as
long as the particles keep dancing the
flame keeps burning all flames need
oxygen to survive when you blow a candle
out your breath whisks away the dancing
molecules of oxygen and carbon the dance
is over and the flame is gone until
