FAQs on When the Earth Shook - 1 Class 5 Worksheet EVS Chapter 14

1. What causes earthquakes?
Ans. Earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust. This energy is usually caused by the movement of tectonic plates, which are large pieces of the Earth's lithosphere that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere below.
2. How are earthquakes measured?
Ans. Earthquakes are measured using a scale called the Richter scale. This scale measures the amplitude of seismic waves produced by an earthquake, which is then used to estimate the earthquake's magnitude. The magnitude is a measure of the energy released by the earthquake.
3. Can earthquakes be predicted?
Ans. Currently, scientists cannot predict earthquakes with precision. While there are some warning signs that can indicate the possibility of an earthquake, such as increased seismic activity or changes in the Earth's crust, these signs are not reliable enough to accurately predict when and where an earthquake will occur.
4. What are the risks associated with earthquakes?
Ans. Earthquakes can cause a variety of risks and hazards. The most immediate risk is the shaking of the ground, which can cause buildings and infrastructure to collapse, leading to injuries and deaths. Earthquakes can also trigger other hazards such as landslides, tsunamis, and even volcanic eruptions in some cases.
5. How can we prepare for an earthquake?
Ans. There are several steps that individuals and communities can take to prepare for an earthquake. These include creating an emergency plan, identifying safe spots in your home or workplace, securing heavy furniture and objects, and having an emergency supply kit with essentials such as water, food, and first aid supplies. It is also important to educate yourself and others on what to do during an earthquake, such as "Drop, Cover, and Hold On."
