Q1: What are nouns?
Ans: A noun is the name of a person, place, language, thing or quality.
Examples are: child, man, girl, book, computer, India, mother, dog, birds, language, river, rice, kindness, beauty etc.
There are different types of nouns.
Proper nouns:-
A proper noun is the name of a particular person or thing. Note that proper nouns always begin with capital letters.
Examples are: Maya, Rahul, Hindi, India, Kerala, Rahim, James, Mumbai, Tuesday, Sahara, Africa etc.
Common noun:-
A common noun does not denote any particular person or thing. It refers to a class of people or objects. Examples are: books, students, people, animals, dog, river, country, language, nation, apple etc.
Note that Ram is a proper noun but boy is a common noun. Likewise, India is a proper noun but country is a common noun.
Collective noun:-
A collective noun refers to a collection of people or things.
Examples are: army, bunch, fleet, audience, flight, herd, pride, troop, battalion, committee, council etc.
Q2: Underline the nouns in the following sentences and state their type – proper, common or collective.
(i) Janvi bought a bunch of flowers for her mother.

Ans: I have invited Rahul (proper noun) and Raveena (proper noun) to my party (common noun).
(xvi) The travelers were attacked by a herd of elephants.
Ans: The travelers (common noun) were attacked by a herd of elephants (collective noun).
(xvii) My cat has just had a litter of kittens.
Ans: My cat (common noun) has just had a litter of kittens (collective noun).
(xviii) My father is an architect.
