2. He went after Matsya, but Matsya dived down through the water and hid among the seaweed
and rocks. Matsya was clever, yes, but she was scared. “What shall I do?” Cried Matsya.”The

must find some way to save myself.”
3. Matsya swam and swam until she came to the ocean’s edge. There she met Manu, the
fisherman. Matsya told Manu her story.”If I continue to live in the ocean, I will surely die, “said
Matsya.”Oh, we must not let you die!”Said Manu. He took Matsya in his hand with some water
for her to swim in.
4. Now Matsya was happy again. Manu’s wife put her in a bowl of water, and his children helped
their mother to look after her. Everyday Manu fed Matsya, and Matsya grew bigger and
stronger and wiser and more beautiful.
5. One day she filled the bowl completely! Then Manu and his family made a little pool for
Matsya. Matsya swam about in the waters of the pool in and out among the water lilies.

2. “No! Quiet! It’s none of your business.”The monkey bites into the skin of the melon, but then
he throws the melon to the ground.”Ah! It tastes bad.”
3. The bullock tells him that he should have eaten the inside instead of the skin.”Yes, of course.
We should eat the flesh of the fruits instead of the skin. I know that.”
4. Then the monkey comes to a field of muskmelon. He selects one melon, breaks it open and
takes out the flesh, putting a handful into his mouth. Then a donkey nearby tells him,”You
should have eaten the shell instead of the flesh.”
5. The monkey spits out the flesh and the seeds, and throws away the shell of the
muskmelon.”Now I understand-eat the shell, not the flesh!”
6. Next, he comes upon a walnut tree and picks a green walnut. A magpie shouts at him, “Be
careful!”But the monkey replies, “Mind your own business! I know, I should eat the shell.”He
takes one bite of the green shell, but it is very bitter. It tastes so bad that he has to go to the
riverside to throw it out of his mouth.
7. Then the magpie comes to tell him, ”Actually, you should eat the nut inside the shell!”Surely,
now the monkey understands. He soon comes to a pear tree and takes down one pear. He
smashes open the pear and puts the seed of the fruit into his mouth. Oh, this also tastes so bad
that he has to spit it out. Then he started crying,”What good are they?-none of them taste
good. I will never again eat any fruits.”
