Sing a song of people
Walking fast or slow;
People in the city,
Up and down they go.
People on the sidewalk,
People on the bus;
People passing, passing,
In back and front of us.
Summary: The first two paragraphs of the poem highlights the picture of a world where people are busy walking. Some people walk slow and others walk fast. They go up and down. Some people prefer walking on the sidewalks, some prefer going on the bus. Everyone is seen passing here and there.
Paragraph 3&4

Underneath the ground;
People riding taxis

People with their hats on,
Going in the doors;
People with umbrellas
When it rains and pours.
Summary: The third and the fourth paragraphs continue saying that the people moving on the subway underneath the ground are also moving and are busy with their job. Some people prefer riding taxis and going and around. People do not even stop because of the rain. They put hats on their head or take an umbrella and continue their work.
Paragraph 5&6
People in tall buildings
And in stores below;
Riding elevators
Up and down they go.
People walking singly,
People in a crowd;
People saying nothing,
People talking loud.
Summary: The fifth and sixth paragraphs of the poem further mention that people are sometimes in tall buildings or sometimes in stores below. Some people prefer riding the elevator going up and down. Some people sing to themselves in a crowd. Some people talk aloud in a crowd while some prefer to be quiet. The characteristic of every person differs from other.
Paragraph 7&8
People laughing, smiling,
Grumpy people too;
People who just hurry
And never look at you!
Sing a song of people
Who likes to come and go;
Sing of city people
You see but never know!
Summary: In the last two paragraphs of the poem, the poet further mentions that some people are laughing or smiling whereas. Some are grumpy and sad too. The people in the crowd are always busy and nobody has the time to look at each other. Thus the poet wants us a sing a song of people who will always come and go. We see the same crowd going on and on every day but we never know each other.
