(i) What are the conditions a seed need to sprout or germinate?
Ans:  The conditions which are required to sprout or germinate a seed are:

  • First Seeds are soaked in water.
  • Then wrapped in a wet cloth.
  • Last hung up so that they get proper water and air.

(ii) Write any four seeds that you eat.
Ans: Chana, rajma, moong, and dry peas can be eaten.

(iii) Name the plants that we got from South America.
Ans: We got tomato, potato, and green chili from South America.

(iv) Name the plants that come from Europe.
Ans: The cabbage and peas came from Europe.

(v) Name the plants that we got from Africa.
Ans: A coffee bean and a green bhindi came from Africa.

(vi) What was grown in India for a long time?  
Ans: Mangoes and Bananas were grown in India for a long time.

(vii) What would happen, if seeds did not spread and remained in one place only?  
Ans: If seeds are not dispersed, all the seeds would fall near the parent tree. This will prevent those seeds from getting enough sunlight, air, and water.  As a result, none of the plants would grow properly or survive.

(viii) Why seeds kept in an air-tight container do not sprout?
Ans: Seeds need oxygen, just like we need air to breathe.

  • When seeds are stored in an air-tight container, they are sealed off from the outside air.
  • Without air, the seeds cannot access the oxygen necessary for their germination or sprouting process.

(ix) Why seeds kept in the refrigerator do not sprout?
Ans: Seeds need the right conditions to sprout and grow.

  • They need a warmer environment to activate their internal processes and start growing.
  • The refrigerator is kept at a low temperature, it is not suitable for the seeds to begin their sprouting process.
  • When seeds are kept in the refrigerator, the cold temperature prevents or delays their sprouting and growth.

(x) Name the plant in the given picture. How does it trap the insects?
Ans: It is the Pitcher plant also known as Nepenthese.

  • It is found in Australia, Indonesia, and Meghalaya in India.
  • It has a pitcher-like shape and the mouth is covered by a leaf.

  • The plant has a special smell that attracts insects to it. When the insect land on the mouth of the plant, it gets trapped and can't get out.

(xi) How do seeds spread to far-off places? (or) Name the agents of dispersal of seeds.
Ans: An "Agent" in seed dispersal refers to some force that helps carries seeds away from the parent plant.
Few examples:

  • Wind: Some seeds have special adaptations that allow them to be carried by the wind.
  • Water: Certain seeds are designed to float on water. Waterproof coverings of seeds enable them to be carried away by rivers, streams, or ocean currents.
  • Animals: Animals play a crucial role in seed dispersal. Some seeds have adaptations that make them sticky or have hooks that attach to the fur, feathers, or skin of animals.
