1. Most of us would agree that it is admirable to be loyal. We approve of loyalty to our friends and loyalty to our country. By loyalty here, we mean a readiness to help people when they are in difficulty or danger, and a constant interest in their well-being at all times. A person is disloyal when he lets his parents suffer without showing any concern or fights in an army against his fellow countrymen. However, there arise situations in which it is harder to decide if a person is being disloyal or not. A clever child may resist his parents’ appeals to stop studying and pick up a job in order to help them financially He may believe that he will be able to repay his parents more fully in the near future if he continues his studies for a few years longer, whereas, if he stops now, his talent will be wasted and not serve any purpose 'to anybody On the other hand, if a boy’s parents are in great poverty, it might be disloyal for him to refuse to help them by going out to work and even if later in life he is successful, he may regret his disloyalty as a boy
2. A more difficult problem sometimes is that of a human being’s relationship with the government of his country. A group of people who sincerely love their country and are anxious for its prosperity may revolt against the government, because they believe Idle government is doing something bad for the country. They will immediately be called rebels and traitors. Calling them rebels may be correct but not traitors, for they may be more truly loyal to the interests of their fellow countrymen than the government of the day Here, we have to see if they were inspired by true loyalty or by selfish interests.

1. There are several indicators of a developed nation. It is economically, agriculturally and technologically advanced. There is all round prosperity. The benefits of prosperity reach the common people. They have a reasonable life span and enjoy the basic comforts and good health. They are able to educate and feed their children well. Poverty, illiteracy, ignorance, disease and inequalities are reduced to a minimum. Quality goods are produced in abundance and exports keep on rising. The nation is able to protect its security as it is self-reliant in defence and has a standing in the international forum.
2. India, even after more than sixty-five years since independence is branded as a developing country. Achieving the developed status means the major transformation of our national economy to make it one of the largest economies of the world, where people live well and above the poverty line. The transformation can be materialised within the next 15 to 20 years as India has the necessary potential. Our natural resources are richer as compared to those of many other countries. We have abundant supplies of all the ores and minerals. We have rich bio-diversity, abundant sunshine, varied agro-climatic conditions and plenty of rainfall all over India. The country either already has all the necessary technologies or can develop them easily. Our people and our farmers not only have a great learning capability but most of them also have an entrepreneurial and competitive spirit. Avenues to channelise this spirit constructively and productively are required. We need the will to take action and commit ourselves to be one of the world leaders. We must resolve to work hard with a long term vision.
3. Technology is the highest wealth generator in the shortest possible time. It can provide us with infrastructure and help transform education and training, food and processing, industries and agriculture. It is the key to achieving quality products in an increasingly competitive market and to continually upgrading human skills. It is the only vital input for ensuring health security and better living conditions for people.
It can enable us to double cereals by 2020 and to make arrangements for their storage, transportation, distribution and marketing. It can make us leaders in machine tool industries. Through software engineering we can enter computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing.

Adventure refers to an exciting activity or unusual experience, daring or risky in nature. The lure of adventure makes many walk the unbeaten path. But it is only the daring and the courageous who embrace a life full of adventure. It is actually the thrill of unusual experiences, the joy of exploring the unknown which makes a person undertake adventurous activities and careers. Activities like ballooning, racing, rafting, mountaineering, skydiving, trekking involves risk and daring and beckon those who want to except challenges. An adventurous person does not bother about the outcome. It is this attitude which gives him the courage to face the unknown. Many young men join armed forces and mountaineering in difficult terrain only because of the lure of adventure. Willingness to undertake adventure is a necessary part of a happy existence.

Your friend has behaved very selfishly in the canteen today and so you are very sad. Write a diary entry in about 100-120 words.

Dear Diary
Today, I’m really upset with the way Rima behaved with me in the canteen. We both had decided not to bring lunch from our homes. We wanted to buy chhole bhature from the school canteen. As the bell for the recess rang all students ran towards the canteen. The chhole bhature of our school canteen are very delicious. They are the students’ favourite. We were trying hard to get them but the senior boys brusquely pushed us aside. Finally, Rima got a chance to buy chhole bhature but she didn’t purchase for me. She started eating at the counter and I kept waiting for her. Soon the bell rang and recess got over. I couldn’t buy chhole bhature for myself and had to remain hungry. I felt hurt as Rima didn’t buy chhole bhature for me. She didn’t even offer to share them with me. Should I talk to her about it tomorrow or should I just forget about the incident and move on ?

Q.4. Narrate an interesting story of an encounter with a strange woman on a railway platform when you were coming back from Mumbai. Use the given clues in framing your story.

 Waiting at Mumbai Central Station—train late — a woman in white saree came — took me to a restaurant — introduced herself to others as my 'mother' — most memorable day of my life.

Ans. A few days ago, i had to travel alone to Ahmedabad by train so I went to Mumbai Central Station to board the train. As the incoming train was late, i waited on the platform. Finding me atone, a woman in a white saree approached me. She spoke very affectionately to me and persuaded me to accompany her to the refreshment room for lunch. She reminded me very much of my mother who had died years ago.
In the refreshment room I met an old classmate of mine having food with his mother. I had not met him after my mother’s death nine years ago. When I introduced myself to my classmate’s mother, the lady accompanying me introduced herself as my mother. Though this was a surprise for me, I did not object, as I felt very comfortable with her. I addressed her as ‘Maa’ infront of others.
Soon, there was an announcement that our train would leave after 45 minutes so we finished our meal quickly and went back to the platform. The incoming train was just pulling into the station. As the old lady was also going to Ahmedabad, I had a wonderful journey in her company. It had been the most memorable day of my life after my mother passed away.

Buddy is Shaurya’s constant companion. He met him in a very unusual way. It was a sunny morning in the month of April. Shaurya was on an early morning stroll in the neighbourhood park. He was, as usual, completing his round of the park when suddenly he heard a low whimpering sound coming from a nearby bush. When he peeped inside, he saw a very cute small puppy, its leg was injured and it was in great pain. He pulled it out and immediately took it to a nearby veterinary doctor. The doctor treated the puppy and cleaned its wound. Shaurya went back to the park and dropped the puppy where he had found him amidst the bushes. But to his surprise, the puppy followed him to his house. Shaurya’s mother did not like dogs but as the puppy was following him, he could not help but take the puppy inside and gave some milk to the puppy, initially, Shaurya’s mother was not happy but the cute puppy wagged its tail very adorably at the mother. Somehow Shaurya convinced his mother that he would look after the puppy and she need not worry about it. Shaurya named the puppy ’Buddy1 and took it overy day to the park in case anyone wanted to claim it, but no one did so. Soon the puppy became Shaurya’s best friend.

(i) Margie and Tommy are getting education in their homes from a mechanical teacher who teaches them everything. It was large, black, ugly-looking and had a big screen with lessons, questions and test papers appearing on it.
(ii) The ‘holy man’ who blessed Santosh’s mother was surprised as her grandmother wanted him to bless Santosh’s mother for giving birth to a baby girl instead of a baby boy. This was surprising for him as all others wanted to be blessed by him for giving birth to a boy.
(iii) Montmorency sat on the things that were to be packed. He put his leg into the jam. He pretended the lemons were rats and got into the hamper and attacked three of them. He also chased the teaspoons, thus, creating chaos.
(iv) In the poem ‘On Killing a Tree’, a tree has grown to its full size by taking water and nutrients from the soil of the Earth. The bright sunshine and fresh air over the years has helped the tree to develop a strong tree-trunk and to sprout leaves on its branches.
(v) The kingdom was without a King or a Minister. The people of the kingdom were confused. They had been impressed with the intellectual capacity and wisdom of the Guru and his disciple. So they made them the King and the Minister.
(vi) The different tasks that the beggar did for Sergei included cutting wood, shovelling snow, setting the woodshed right and dusting the rugs and mattresses. He also helped in packing and moving of the furniture at Sergei’s house.

In the context of the lesson 'The Fun They Had' do you think mechanical teachers or computer instructor cannot replace humans as teachers.

Do you think that all living beings should have love for one another as the poet has also expressed similar feelings in the poem 'The Snake Trying'. Express your views.
Ans.
A teacher not only has to teach and explain things, but also has to understand the problems and mindsets of the students. A computer instructor will only be able to deliver the lesson but will not be able to understand the problems of the students. A teacher (human) emotionally connects to the students to make the child comfortable but this is not the case with a mechanical teacher. Teaching can be best done by a person because then only will they be able to pass on the correct values and lessons to the students. A human teacher always teaches on humanitarian ground. He is emotionally attached to his students but it doesn't happen with a robotic teacher.

Yes, it is true that all human beings must have love for one another as love is a natural and easily understandable phenomenon. Love is a godly quality and we should have abundance of love in our heart. The poet has a deep rooted love and he expresses his emotions towards the snake that seems to be taken of the fact that all the ordinary human beings must show the same mentality. Love is everlasting and it never comes to an end. It is a universal instinct so no one can ignore it. Love is a common language of all the living creatures so it binds them together. It is the quality of love alone that spreads peace and harmony all round and promotes fraternity. Each and every living creature should have such holy and pious trait. Hence, it can be clearly said that love is an essential part of our lives. So, everyone should try their best to promote the feeling of love and harmony.

Q.11. Answer one of the following questions in about 100-150 words : “ My mind was not on it”, said the brick layer. Was this a good excuse for not building the wall properly ? Should he be punished or forgiven ?
Ans. Though the bricklayer cannot be blamed for the death of the thief, his excuse that he was careless and neglected the job for which he had been hired is unjustified. Negligence in work cannot be condoned because one has to face serious consequences for one’s irresponsible actions. If a driver does not focus on driving, the danger of an accident looms high. Therefore, the bricklayer’s excuse reflects his unprofessionalism. Men like him cannot be depended upon and do not deserve any sympathy, whatsoever. He should have been pulled up for his remark because it reflected his callous attitude towards work. Punishing him by imposing a fine would have set a good example for the other workers. Though, in the Kingdom of fools his argument saved him from being hanged, such an attitude requires zero tolerance.

“The seam stresses are so lazy.” Do you agree with the remark made by the Queen’s maid of honour ?
Ans. The rich get what they want without much effort so they cannot imagine the hard work and sacrifice involved for earning a livelihood. The Queen’s maid of honour had made a casual comment, on the seamstresses being lazy, which is not a reality. The seamstress had been working continuously for hours together on the dress. She had even neglected her son who was suffering from high fever. Her hands were all red and pricked, by embroidering flowers on the satin gown, yet to ensure completing the dress on time, she endures the pain. It is a means o f survival for her. Her hard work and sacrifice which had gone into the creation o f the final product fades in comparison to her earnings. However, the Queen’s maid does not know the background of the seamstress, and so one cannot expect her to empathise with her. Her comment is certainly cruel.
