FAQs on Quick Revision: Magnetism & Matter - Physics for JAMB

1. What is magnetism and how does it relate to matter?
Ans. Magnetism is a force that attracts or repels certain materials, known as magnetic materials. It is caused by the motion of electric charges. Matter consists of atoms, which contain both positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons. When these charges move, they create a magnetic field, resulting in magnetism.
2. What are the different types of magnets?
Ans. There are three main types of magnets: permanent magnets, temporary magnets, and electromagnets. Permanent magnets, like refrigerator magnets, retain their magnetism without an external magnetic field. Temporary magnets, such as iron nails, become temporarily magnetized when brought close to a permanent magnet. Electromagnets, on the other hand, are made by wrapping a wire around an iron core and passing an electric current through it, creating a magnetic field.
3. How does magnetism affect matter?
Ans. Magnetism can affect matter in various ways. Magnetic materials, such as iron, nickel, and cobalt, can be attracted to magnets or become magnetized themselves. In the presence of a magnetic field, the alignment of magnetic domains within these materials can change, resulting in a magnetization. Non-magnetic materials, like wood or plastic, are not affected by magnetic fields and do not exhibit magnetism.
4. What is the importance of magnetism in everyday life?
Ans. Magnetism plays a crucial role in numerous everyday applications. It is used in electric motors, generators, transformers, and speakers. Magnets are also used to secure objects, such as doors or cabinet doors. Magnetic strips are found in credit cards and ID cards for data storage. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique that uses powerful magnets to create detailed images of the body's internal structures.
5. Can magnetism be shielded or blocked?
Ans. Yes, magnetism can be shielded or blocked using certain materials. Magnetic shielding materials, like mu-metal or permalloy, can redirect magnetic field lines, reducing their effect on the surrounding area. Conductive materials, such as copper or aluminum, can also create a magnetic shield by creating eddy currents that oppose the magnetic field. Additionally, magnetic fields can be blocked by placing a magnetic material, like iron or steel, in the path of the field.
