When Marcy reached the hospital she was overwhelmed with shock and grief. She found her husband unable to speak properly; he could breathe and see but his face had lost its familiar expression and his eyes registered confusion. Today is a day of mixed emotions. I have just received the official order: I am to be Assistant National Sales Manager. Joy wells up in me because this promotion proves that my effort has meaning. At the same time my heart aches because the one who made this possible is no longer with me.

I remember clearly when Duke first came home. After the accident I had lost hope, but Duke did not give in. He stood by me when I trembled and fell; he waited patiently as I learned to move my legs again. He would nudge me, pull me along the street and quietly encourage me with his faithful eyes. It was his steady insistence that taught me to keep trying.

This promotion is as much his as it is mine. I intend to honour Duke's memory by working with the same loyalty and perseverance he showed me. Whenever doubts assail me, I will remember the mornings we walked and the long road we travelled together. He taught me to struggle, to endure and to hope again-qualities that brought me back to life and, now, to this new responsibility.
