Part A: Identify the Interjection

Q. Directions: In the following sentences, identify the interjection and circle it.

(i) Hi, I'm glad that you could make it to my party.

Ans: "Hi" is the interjection; it is used as a greeting to attract attention and to welcome someone.

(ii) Wow! You look great tonight.

Ans: "Wow" is the interjection; it expresses surprise or admiration at someone's appearance.

(iii) That was the best performance that I have ever seen, bravo!

Ans: "Bravo" is the interjection; it is used to praise or congratulate someone for a good performance.

(iv) I can't believe you broke my favorite toy, bah.

Ans: "Bah" is the interjection; it expresses contempt, irritation or strong disappointment.

(v) Hmm, I wonder where I put my keys and wallet?

Ans: "Hmm" is the interjection; it signals thinking, hesitation or that someone is pondering a question.

(vi) Eureka, I've struck gold!

Ans: "Eureka" is the interjection; it shows sudden excitement or the joy of making a discovery.

(vii) "Shoo, go away!" shouted the woman when she saw the cat licking milk from her cereal bowl.

Ans: "Shoo" is the interjection; it is used to scare or drive something away quickly, as in telling the cat to go.

(viii) I guess that's the end of the movie, darn.

Ans: "Darn" is the interjection; it expresses mild frustration, annoyance or disappointment.

(ix) Stop! You should always wear a helmet when riding a bike.

Ans: "Stop" is the interjection; it is used to demand immediate cessation of an action for safety or other reasons.

(x) Yippee, I made this picture all by myself.

Ans: "Yippee" is the interjection; it expresses excitement and happiness about an achievement.

Part B: Choose the Right Interjection

Q. Directions: In the following sentences, choose the most appropriate interjection from the selection below and write it in the space provided.
Choose from: Wow, Seriously, Goodness, Dang, Yippee, Incredible, Bingo, Geez, Yay, Darn

Of course, the answers to the fill-in section can vary. Several of the options can fit more than one sentence. You could say, "Seriously," but I might say, "Geez." You might say, "Yay," and I'd say, "Wow." But for the purposes of the exercise we selected these answers:

Ans: Bingo - the interjection shows excitement and that a correct idea or solution has been found.

(vii) ______________, that's a very large dog at the end of that leash.

Ans: Geez - the interjection shows surprise or a little alarm at the size of the dog.

(viii) I can't believe that I finally got an A on a project, ____________!

Ans: Incredible - the interjection expresses delight and amazement at the achievement.

(ix) ______________, my favorite author is doing a reading at the local library.

Ans: Yay - the interjection shows strong excitement and happiness about the event.

(x) This is my first new car,_______________.

Ans: Yippee - the interjection expresses great excitement and joy about getting a new car.
