Class 9 Maths Chapter 13 HOTS Questions - Statistics

Q1: Find the missing frequencies in the following frequency distribution. If it is known that the mean of the distribution is 50.16 and the total number of items is 125.
Class 9 Maths Chapter 13 HOTS Questions - StatisticsSol:

Since total number of items = 125
∴ 17 + f1 + 32 + f1 + 19 = 125
f1 + f2 = 125 – 17 – 32 – 19
f1 + f2 = 57 …..(i)
Now, mean of data = 50.16
We know that

Multiplying (i) by 3, we have
3f1 + 3f2 = 171 ......(iii)
Substracting (iii) from (ii) we have

f= 57 - 27
Hence, f1 = 30 and f2 = 27

Q2:The mean weight of 60 students of a class is 52.75 kg. If mean weight of 25 students of this class is 51 kg, find the mean weight of remaining 35 students of the class.
Sol:

Total weight of 60 students = 60 × 52.75 kg = 3165 kg
Total weight of 25 students = 25 × 51 kg = 1275 kg
∴ Total weight of 35 students = (3165 – 1275) kg = 1890 kg
∴ Mean weight of 35 students = 1890 / 35 = 54 kg

(i) Representation of data using bar graph.
(ii) Very good
(a) Picnic for family
(b) Tuition fee for needy child
(iii) Help the needy people and respect the elders.

Q4: The following data on the number of girls (to the nearest ten) per thousand boys in different sections of the Indian society is given below :
Class 9 Maths Chapter 13 HOTS Questions - Statistics(i) Represent the information above by a bar graph.
(ii) In the classroom, discuss what conclusions can be arrived at from the graph.
(iii) What steps should be taken to improve the situation ?
Sol:

(i) The required graph is given below :
Class 9 Maths Chapter 13 HOTS Questions - StatisticsIn the graph, different sections of the society is taken on X-axis and number of girls per thousand boys is taken on the Y-axis.
[Scale : 1 cm = 10 girls.]
(ii) From the graph, the number of girls to the nearest ten per thousand boys are maximum in scheduled tribes whereas they are minimum in urban.
(iii) Pre-natal sex determination should strictly banned in urban.

FAQs on Class 9 Maths Chapter 13 HOTS Questions - Statistics

1. What are the basic concepts of statistics?
Ans. The basic concepts of statistics include data collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation. It involves the collection of data from various sources, organizing the data in a meaningful way, analyzing the data using statistical techniques, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in a clear and concise manner.
2. How can statistics be used in everyday life?
Ans. Statistics can be used in everyday life in various ways. For example, it can help in making informed decisions by analyzing data and identifying trends. It can be used to understand and interpret information presented in the media, such as polls and surveys. Statistics can also be used to evaluate and compare products or services based on their performance or customer feedback.
3. What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?
Ans. Descriptive statistics involves the presentation and summarization of data using measures such as mean, median, and mode. It provides a clear picture of the data, but does not make any inferences or predictions about the population. On the other hand, inferential statistics involves drawing conclusions or making predictions about a population based on a sample. It uses probability theory and hypothesis testing to make inferences.
4. What is the importance of statistical analysis in research studies?
Ans. Statistical analysis is crucial in research studies as it helps in drawing valid and reliable conclusions from data. It allows researchers to analyze and interpret the results of their study, determine the significance of their findings, and make generalizations about the population being studied. Statistical analysis also helps in identifying relationships between variables, testing hypotheses, and making predictions.
5. What are the different types of sampling techniques used in statistics?
Ans. There are various types of sampling techniques used in statistics, including simple random sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, and systematic sampling. Simple random sampling involves randomly selecting individuals from the population. Stratified sampling involves dividing the population into subgroups and selecting samples from each subgroup. Cluster sampling involves randomly selecting groups or clusters from the population. Systematic sampling involves selecting samples at regular intervals from a list or population. Each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of sampling technique depends on the research objectives and constraints.
