FAQs on NCERT Solution (Ex 1.2) - Chapter 1: Rational Number , Maths, Class 8

1. What are rational numbers?
Ans. Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed in the form of p/q, where p and q are integers and q is not equal to zero. They can be positive, negative or zero.
2. How can we represent rational numbers on a number line?
Ans. To represent rational numbers on a number line, we first mark the integers on the number line. Then, we divide the distance between two consecutive integers into equal parts and mark these points. We can represent any rational number as a point on this number line.
3. What is meant by the absolute value of a rational number?
Ans. The absolute value of a rational number is its distance from zero on the number line. It is always a positive number. For example, the absolute value of -2/3 is 2/3.
4. How do we compare two rational numbers?
Ans. To compare two rational numbers, we first convert them into equivalent fractions with the same denominator. Then, we compare their numerators. If the numerators are equal, the fractions are equal. If the numerators are not equal, we compare them to see which is greater.
5. Can square root of a rational number be irrational?
Ans. Yes, the square root of a rational number can be irrational. For example, the square root of 2 is irrational, but 2 is a rational number.
