THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1942

• Everybody is scared and shocked at a sudden ringing of the doorbell at 8 p.m., an usual time for someone to come calling at a business office. Thankfully, it turns out to be nothing.
• They celebrate Mrs. van Daan’s birthday.
• Peter and Anne dress up, Peter in women’s clothes and Anne in men’s, to amuse the adults.
• Mrs. van Daan likes to flirt with Mr. Frank. Apparently she likes patting his cheeks and hiking up her skirt and stuff. Thankfully Anne’s dad isn’t remotely interested.
• The three teenagers are going to start taking a shorthand course at home.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1942 

• Another argument erupts between Anne and her mother (who knows what about) but her mom then starts harping on all of Anne’s faults. This makes both Anne and her mother cry, but for different reasons.
• Anne tells her father she loves him more than her mother. He thinks it’s just a passing phase. Mr. Frank also wishes Anne would help her mother more, but Anne refuses.
• Anne gets to read slightly more grown-up books, but they sound pretty ridiculous. In a book Anne is reading, one of the characters gets her period, and Anne envies that. She wants to be grown up.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1942

• Anne writes an entry imagining that she’s in Switzerland and her father gives her money to buy whatever she wants.
• What does she end up getting? Underwear, clothes, shoes, purses, makeup, soap, books, etc. That she’s daydreaming about buying underwear means that she’s really living without many luxuries right now.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1942 

• Anne describes some news she’s gotten from the radio and Miep.
• The Gestapo are treating Jewish people without the least bit of decency or humanity.
• The radio says that people are getting gassed.
• Bep (one of the "protectors" who works in the office) is afraid her boyfriend will be sent to Germany to fight, where he is likely to die.
• Anne reflects how she used to be German, but now Germans and Jews are the greatest of enemies.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1942

• Anne is busy with schoolwork... but avoiding math.
• Anne, Margot, and their mom are all friends again. Anne and Margot decide to let each other read portions of each their diaries.
• Anne and Margot have another sisterly moment, where Margot assures Anne that she is quite attractive and has nice eyes, but Anne is not satisfied and thinks the comment is too vague.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1942 

• Nobody warns the Franks or van Daans that somebody is coming to refill the fire extinguishers. Everybody hears banging from the carpenter. They’re all scared silly.
• Finally, they hear a knock. But it is just Mr. Kleiman.
• Anne is relieved and says that in her mind, the man who was trying to get in had grown to be the greatest fascist that ever walked the earth.
• On Monday, Miep and Jan Gies had a slumber party with the Annex group.

 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1942

• Anne’s father is sick and they obviously can’t call a doctor.
• Anne is allowed to read more grown-up books lately, and in German too.
• Anne’s mother gives her a book of prayers and Anne tries to read them in German but doesn’t feel very religious.

MONDAY NOVEMBER 2, 1942 

• Bep stays the night in the Annex, just for fun.
• Anne is again hoping she’ll start her period soon. 

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1942

• Anne isn’t getting along with Margot again. Things are going a bit better with her mom, but not that great.
• The British have had some success on the war front in Africa lately.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1942 

• Peter turns sixteen.
• Mr. van Daan announces that the British have landed in Tunis, Algiers, Casablanca, and Oran. Everybody is saying this is the beginning of the end, but Mr. Churchill says that it is "the end of the beginning."
• While lugging a sack of beans upstairs, Peter accidentally splits one of them and a "hailstorm" of brown beans pours down the stairs all over Anne.
• Mr. Frank isn’t sick anymore.
