November 10 to December 22, 1942, The Diary of Anne Frank Summary | Class 10 Novels PDF Download

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1942

  • The Secret Annex group decides that, given the situation, they should try to rescue one more Jew. It is just as dangerous for seven people to be hiding as for eight.
  • After Mr. Frank rejects the idea of bringing any more of the van Daan family into the Secret Annex, they invite an elderly Jewish dentist, Alfred Dussel, to join them.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1942

  • Mr. Dussel is pleased to find that he has a hiding place and accepts. However, he strangely decides to get his dentistry records up to date and see a couple of patients before entering into hiding.
  • Anne wonders why he doesn’t jump at the chance of hiding immediately, given the situation. We’re thinking along the same lines as her.

 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1942

  • Mr. Dussel arrives and is shocked to discover the Franks. He had completely been taken in by the story that they had escaped.
  • The van Daans give him a copy of the "Prospectus and Guide to the Secret Annex," which demonstrates that the van Daans do have a sense of humor after all. It’s written like a typical tourist tract and describes the hiding place as if it is a luxury resort for Jews. You should definitely check this part out, if you haven’t already.

 THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1942

  • Mr. Dussel becomes Anne’s roommate. This guy, as Anne puts it, is "slow to catch on" to the rules.
  • Mr. Dussel describes what has been going on in the "outside" world and everybody is shocked to discover which friends have disappeared.
  • Anne reflects on how guilty she feels because she is warm and protected when so many people she knows are being rounded up by the Germans.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1942

  • Now that Mr. Dussel is around to talk about current events, Anne thinks about how little they knew about the outside world.
  • Miep protects them from the news because she knows it will make Mother and Mrs. van Daan cry.
  • Anne feels like she can’t be happy when so many people in the world are suffering.
  • Anne feels lonely, and as beloved as her father is, he cannot replace all that she has lost. She misses her friends.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1942

  • The members of the Annex have used too much electricity (there’s a ration on it) and it will be cut off for two weeks.
  • One of Mr. Dussel’s favorite pastimes is to give Anne sermons on proper manners and behavior. This, in addition to Mrs. van Daan’s nagging, is really hard for Anne to deal with.
  • Anne wishes she could behave differently than she does.

 MONDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1942

  • The members of the Secret Annex celebrate Hanukkah and St. Nicholas Day. Everyone gets little gifts.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1942

  • Mr. van Daan proves his usefulness when they get a lot of meat and he turns it into sausage, which apparently also preserves it.
  • Mrs. van Daan thinks she has broken a rib, to which Anne says, "that’s what happens when old ladies do such stupid exercises to get rid of their fat behinds!" Burn. Anne's commentary is pretty savage (and awesome).
  • Mr. Dussel plays dentist and tries to fix Mrs. van Daan’s teeth, but the woman is a terrible patient.
  • Anne doesn’t seem to think that Mr. Dussel is such a great dentist because she compares him to a "quack" from the Middle Ages and calls Mrs. van Daan his "first victim."

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1942

  • Anne spends many hours by the window, watching the world pass outside. She makes up short stories about the people who walk by.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1942

  • The excitement of the day is that the Annex group is getting extra butter rations for Christmas and everybody is wondering what they will bake with it.
  • Anne makes cookies and two cakes.
  • We actually hear something good about Mrs. van Daan: Anne says that when Mrs. Van Daan is well (she has a bruised hip right now), she’s hardworking, neat, and cheerful. Who would have guessed from Anne’s earlier descriptions?
  • Anne can’t stand "His Lordship," Mr. Dussel, who shares her bedroom. He does really annoying things like shushing her (you know, "shhhh") in the middle of the night when she rolls over, whereas he gets up at dawn on Sundays, turns on the lights, and loudly bumps into all of the furniture while getting dressed.
