WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1943

• It is Mrs. van Daan’s birthday and she gets some food rations, but really nothing very exciting.
• Bep has a fit of nerves. So many of the other "protectors" are sick that most of the care and errands for the Secret Annex folks is up to her. She is doing too much work.
• Mr. Dussel is all fussy because he thinks everyone is treating him badly. Mrs. Frank tells him that he has been a disappointment and the cause of a lot of trouble. Anne thinks the man hasn’t done anything to merit being liked.
• Pim and Mr. van Daan are at odds again because the van Daans have been holding back food and acting sneakily.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1943 

• Mr. van Daan has run out of money but Mrs. van Daan doesn’t want to sell any of her nice, valuable clothes. She thinks that the company (the office that they’re living in) should pay for everything they need, which everyone but her thinks is ridiculous.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1943 

• The van Daans have been unable to get money by selling clothes because they’re asking too high a price. They finally sell one of Mrs. van Daans furs, but she wants to keep the money to buy some clothes after the war. This lady is hard to understand.
• The van Daans have a raging fight.
• Anne has lost her appetite and is feeling generally awful and oppressed by the Secret Annex and its inhabitants.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1943

• Anne feels sad because her parents always side with Margot during disagreements. She’s also jealous of her father’s affection for Margot—but she says she isn’t jealous of Margot. Really she just wants to trust that her father loves her for who she is.
• Anne has an even harder time with her mother. She thinks Mrs. Frank doesn’t act like a mom. Anne feels like she has to mother herself.
• Anne believes that she has no good role models and that her parents have let her down.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1943

• Mr. Frank wants to give Anne a Bible to continue her education. It’s rather awkward when everybody realizes he meant to give it to her on Hanukkah; then he says, er, well, St. Nicholas Day might be a better day to give that gift.
• The group is beginning to be careless, according to Anne. They’re lighting a fire during hours when neighbors can see the smoke and opening the curtains occasionally. Everyone fights about these occurrences.

MONDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 8, 1943 

• Anne says that she’s feeling depressed. She’s easily terrified.
• A ring at the door while Bep is there reminds Anne once again of the constant danger they live in.
• In bed at night, Anne imagines the Secret Annex burning, or being alone in a jail.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1943

• Anne eulogizes the life of her fountain pen, which was accidentally burned in the fire.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1943

• The protectors are still either sick or frantically busy.
• Mr. Dussel is giving the van Daans the silent treatment for no apparent reason.
• Mr. Dussel has also been in the Annex for one year. He does not thank the rest of the members for unselfishly taking him in. Anne has absolutely no respect for the man.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1943

• Anne dreams about her old school friend, Lies Hanneli, and feels terribly guilty that she is safe and her friend, in the dream, is suffering.
• Anne asks God to help Lies. She feels very tortured about her friend in this entry.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1943 

• Anne celebrates St. Nicholas Day by giving each person a poem.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1943

• Anne is sick with flu and everybody receives extra food items for Christmas.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1943 

• Anne had the flu (she’s better now). Anne recalls that everyone tried to administer their own cures to her, but the worst was Mr. Dussel putting his head on Anne’s chest to check her heart. This horrified and embarrassed her. It’s a pretty funny story, though, the ways she tells it.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1943 (SECOND ENTRY)

• Anne has conflicted emotions. She feels very lucky when thinking about her situation as compared to that of other Jews, but unhappy when she hears about her protectors’ children’s sports teams and such. Anne wants desperately to have a joyful youth.
• Anne also wants very much to have the kind of mother who is comforting and understands her.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1943

• Anne hopes she becomes like her father, who has been through so much and has become so tolerant.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1943

• Anne receives something for Christmas for the first time in her life. Mr. Kleiman, Mr. Kugler, and the girls (Miep and Bep) surprise the Secret Annex with a cake that says "Peace 1944" on it.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1943

• Anne remembers her grandmother and her friend Lies again and mourns the loss of them from her life. She worries about whether Lies is alright, and whether she is still alive.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1943

• The group continues with its domestic struggles, especially regarding the fair distribution of food.
