January 2 to February 17, 1944, The Diary of Anne Frank Summary | Class 10 Novels PDF Download

SUNDAY, JANUARY 2, 1944

  • Anne rereads some of her journal excerpts from the past and is shocked to see how she describes her mother. She says she no longer gives her mother the trouble she used to because she no longer has the "moods" that she used to have. She’s grown up a lot in a year, in short.
  • This more mature version of Anne feels that her mother does love her, but the relationship is strained because of the tense situation they live in.
  • Rereading her diary, she feels that she often wrote when she was most emotional, so it isn’t an accurate representation about how she usually feels about her life and family.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 1944

  • Anne reflects on her mother’s style of parenting—to try to be a friend to her daughters rather than a mother. Anne thinks this method doesn’t work so well.
  • Anne discusses an article she read on blushing, about how girls undergoing puberty begin to think about the changes to the body and become embarrassed. Anne says that is true. Her periods give her the sense of having a "sweet secret."
  • Also, the article suggests that girls at this age begin to discover that they have thoughts and ideas of their own—also true, Anne writes.
  • Anne admits that she finds nude female bodies very beautiful and exciting.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 1944 (SECOND ENTRY)

  • Peter and Anne begin to explore a friendship. Anne is helping him with crossword puzzles—how romantic.
  • Anne now finds his shyness sweet.
  • Anne dreams of her old childhood sweetheart, Peter Schiff, and thinks of him with longing.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 1944

  • Anne describes the history of her boyfriends for "Kitty" (her diary).
  • The most important boy was Peter Schiff, whom she spent a wonderful summer with before sixth grade, but then he went off to middle school. He also moved and was influenced by his friends to stop seeing Anne, who was younger than him.
  • Anne still has a huge crush on Peter Schiff that time hasn’t cured. Well, actually she says she’s in love with him.
  • Anne thinks that she now understands sexual desire because of how much she loves Peter Schiff. She daydreams about him constantly

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1944

  • Anne is experiencing a dance and ballet craze; she’s making dance outfits for herself and practicing steps. Hey, it’s something to do.
  • Anne reflects how her mother understands Margot but does not understand her, even though her mother thinks she understands both daughters.
  • Anne and Margot’s relationship is improving. According to Anne, it’s because Margot is changing.
  • Anne tries to see herself through the eyes of somebody else.
  • God has sent her a helper—Peter! And by Peter, she means Peter Schiff, not Peter van Daan—yet. The idea of Peter S. is keeping her spirits up.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 1944

  • More fighting.
  • The van Daans are angry because Mrs. Frank’s birthday is approaching and their protectors gave her some extra sugar—Mrs. van Daan was not honored in this way for her birthday.
  • Anne continues to find the van Daans and Mr. Dussel stingy and selfish.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19, 1944

  • Anne dreams again of Peter Schiff.
  • Anne is feeling more and more like she has grown a lot since she first started writing in her diary. She feels more forgiving of her parents, but still longs for her father’s sincere affection.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 22, 1944

  • Anne suddenly has the insight that the Franks are not always right and the van Daans are not always wrong. She realizes this because her own mother can be difficult. She decides that from now on, she will try to be independent in her views rather than biased by her own family.

MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 1944

  • Margot, Peter, and Anne are peeling potatoes and the subject of Boche the cat’s gender comes up. Later, Peter shows Anne how he knows that Boche is a boy. Anne marvels that the subject of sex could come up so naturally with a boy.
  • Anne and Peter don’t know the name of male sexual organs, so Peter is going to ask his dad to report back. Sounds like it will be a odd conversation.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1944

  • Anne is now obsessed with family trees and genealogical charts.
  • Even though it’s been a year or more since she’s gone to the movies, Anne is still able to recognize movie stars and name the movies they’ve been in accurately.
  • Anne experiments with new hairdos, which everyone criticizes.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1944 (SECOND ENTRY)

  • Anne thinks about how unselfish their protectors are, to risk their own lives to save the Franks, van Daans, and Mr. Dussel. They have never complained about the burden or discussed fear of what would happen to them if the Secret Annex were discovered—which is probably the same fate as the Jews.
  • The protectors bring the Secret Annex crew news and stories about other Jews in hiding.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1944

  • The news is full of musings about the possibility of a British invasion and what lengths the Germans would go to prevent such an invasion, including flooding Amsterdam.
  • The members of the Secret Annex have a great discussion about what they’ll do if the Germans manage to flood Amsterdam—swim, walk on stilts, etc.
  • Frightening rumors abound about what the Germans intend to do if Holland is liberated from German occupation.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1944

  • Anne is aching to laugh again, and finally she and Margot get the giggles and actually feel like teenagers.
  • Anne has another run-in with her mom where her mother misinterprets Anne’s teasing as criticism.
  • Anne muses over her parents’ marriage. She thinks that her father married her mom because she would be a good, practical wife and not because he was in love with her. Anne thinks her mom loves him more than anybody and that it’s destroying her mom not to have the love returned.
  • Anne recognizes the lack of love in her mother’s life, but still can’t feel much sympathy for her.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1944

  • The sun is shining and Anne wants nothing more than to be outside.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1944

  • Anne is excited because she notices Peter looking at her and trying not to look at her—basically all of the symptoms of a crush.
  • Peter has a run-in with Mr. Dussel over the radio. Afterwards, Peter reveals to Anne how mad Mr. Dussel makes him. Anne is relieved that she is not the only one who can’t stand the stuffy man.
  • Peter opens up to Anne a bit about his personal insecurities, like his shyness about talking in front of people.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1944

  • Peter apologizes to Mr. Dussel for getting mad at him about the radio incident. Anne is impressed that he could say sorry after having been so mad.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1944

  • It’s Margot’s birthday.
  • Peter and Anne start to talk for long periods of time. He tries to complete little tasks for her (like getting things out of the attic). They are feeling each other out. They like like each other.
  • Anne begins psychoanalyzing Peter. She thinks he has an inferiority complex and is in desperate need of affection.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1944

  • Mrs. van Daan gets Anne to read aloud some of the stories Anne is writing. The older woman really enjoys them.
  • Peter heard some of the stories too and asks Anne to come to his room and read him more. She immediately goes to his room and wonders whether he will ask her again in the future.
