Three Types of Discontinuities

There are 3 common types of discontinuities.

1. Infinite Discontinuity
2. Removable Gap
3. Jump Discontinuity

Let a be a real number and f (x) a real function.  Then we say

1. f creates an Infinite Discontinuity at a
if any of the one or two sided limits at a is infinite.

If f (a) is defined, then we can furthermore say that f has an infinite discontinuity at a.

2. f creates a Removable Gap at a

if the two sided limit

but f (a) is not defined or not equal to the limit.

If f (a) is defined then we can furthermore say that f has a removable gap discontinuity at a.

3. f creates a Jump Discontinuity at a if each of the one sided limits is finite but they don’t agree.

If f (a) is defined then we can furthermore say that f has a jump discontinuity at a.

Discontinuities

  • Every Infinite Discontinuity creates a vertical asymptote.
  • The functions most often encountered in calculus are continuous on their domains (coid) and create only Infinite Discontinuities or Removable Gaps outside of their domains.
  • Jump Discontinuities usually occur with piecewise defined functions.  For example, the functions |x|/x and êë [x] pictured above are piecewise defined functions that create jump discontinuities.
  • A coid function is not defined at any of the discontinuities it creates.
    • The function |x|/x is a coid function that creates a jump discontinuity at zero where it’s not defined.
    • The greatest integer function int(x) is not a coid function because it's defined at each of its jump discontinuities.
  • · Other types of discontinuities by example.
    • Erratic: sin (1/x) is discontinuous at zero in an erratic way.

FAQs on Types of Discontinuity - Real Analysis, CSIR-NET Mathematical Sciences - Mathematics for IIT JAM, GATE, CSIR NET, UGC NET

1. What is a discontinuity in real analysis?
Ans. In real analysis, a discontinuity refers to a point in the domain of a function where the function fails to be continuous. At a discontinuity, the value of the function may be either undefined or different from the value approached from the left or right side of the point.
2. What are the types of discontinuities?
Ans. There are three main types of discontinuities: removable, jump, and essential discontinuities. A removable discontinuity occurs when a function has a hole at a certain point. A jump discontinuity occurs when the function approaches different values from the left and right sides of the point. An essential discontinuity happens when the function has no limit at a certain point.
3. How can we identify a removable discontinuity?
Ans. To identify a removable discontinuity, we need to check if the function is undefined at a certain point, but it can be redefined at that point to make it continuous. This means that if we can assign a value to the function at the point of discontinuity, such that the function becomes continuous, then it is a removable discontinuity.
4. What is the difference between a jump discontinuity and an essential discontinuity?
Ans. The main difference between a jump discontinuity and an essential discontinuity lies in the behavior of the function around the point of discontinuity. In a jump discontinuity, the function approaches different finite values from the left and right sides of the point, resulting in a visible jump or gap in the graph. On the other hand, an essential discontinuity occurs when the function either approaches infinity or oscillates indefinitely around the point of discontinuity.
5. Can a function have more than one type of discontinuity?
Ans. Yes, a function can have multiple types of discontinuities at different points in its domain. For example, a function may have a removable discontinuity at one point, a jump discontinuity at another point, and an essential discontinuity at yet another point. It is important to analyze the behavior of the function around each point of potential discontinuity to determine the type(s) present.
