MCQ: Gravitation, Class 11 - NEET PDF Download

Ques: A uniform ring of mass M & radius R is placed directly above a uniform sphere of mass 8M & radius R. The centre of ring is at a distance of d=√3R from the centre of the sphere. The gravitational attraction between the sphere and ring is

Solution:

MCQ: Gravitation, Class 11 - NEET

Gravitational field due to ring at a distance

d=3–√Rd=3R on its axis is

E=GMd/(R^2+d^2)^3/2

=√3GM/8R^2

Force on the sphere = mass of sphere × E

=8ME

Hence, Force =√3GM^2/R^2

FAQs on MCQ: Gravitation, Class 11 - NEET

1. What is gravitation?
Ans. Gravitation is the force of attraction that exists between any two objects with mass. It is responsible for keeping planets in their orbits, causing objects to fall towards the Earth, and governing the motion of celestial bodies.
2. What is the law of universal gravitation?
Ans. The law of universal gravitation states that every particle in the universe attracts every other particle with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers. This law was formulated by Sir Isaac Newton.
3. How does the mass of an object affect the force of gravity?
Ans. The force of gravity between two objects is directly proportional to the product of their masses. This means that the greater the mass of an object, the greater the force of gravity it exerts on other objects. For example, the Earth, with its large mass, exerts a significant gravitational force on all objects near its surface.
4. What is the difference between weight and mass?
Ans. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the force of gravity acting on an object's mass. Mass is constant and does not change with location, whereas weight can vary depending on the strength of the gravitational field. Weight is calculated by multiplying an object's mass by the acceleration due to gravity.
5. How does the distance between two objects affect the force of gravity?
Ans. According to the law of universal gravitation, the force of gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between two objects. This means that as the distance between two objects increases, the force of gravity decreases. Hence, the closer two objects are, the stronger the gravitational force between them.
