(ii) x2 + y2 + z2- xy - yz - zx
     = (-2)2 + (-1)2 + (3)2 - (-2)(-1) - (-1)(3) - (3)(-2)
     = 4 + 1 + 9 - 2 + 3 + 6
     = (4 + 1 + 9 + 3 + 6) - 2
     = 23 - 2 = 21

Question 12:

Evaluate each of the following algebraic expressions for x = 1, y = −1, z = 2, a = −2, b = 1, c = −2:

(i) axbycz
 (ii) ax2by2 − cz2
 (iii) axybyz + cxy

Answer 12:

We have x = 1, y = −1, z = 2, a = −2, b = 1 and c = −2.
Thus,
(i) ax + by + cz
    = (-2)(1) + (1)(-1) + (-2)(2)
    = - 2 + (- 1) + (- 4)
    = - 2 -1 - 4 = -7

(ii) ax2 + by2 - cz2
    = (-2)(1)2 + (1)(-1)2 - (-2)(2)2
    = -2 x 1 + 1 - (-2 x 4)
    = -2 + 1 - (-8)
    = -2 + 1 + 8
    = -2 + 9
    = 7

(iii) axy + byz + cxy
     = (-2)(1)(-1) + (1)(-1)(2) + (-2)(1)(-1)
     = 2 + (-2) + 2
     = 2 - 2 + 2
     = 4 - 2
     = 2

FAQs on Ex - 7.1, Algebraic Expressions, Class 7, Math RD Sharma Solutions - RD Sharma Solutions for Class 7 Mathematics

1. What are algebraic expressions?
Ans. Algebraic expressions are mathematical expressions that consist of variables, constants, and mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These expressions are used to represent relationships between quantities and can be simplified or evaluated using specific rules.
2. How do you simplify algebraic expressions?
Ans. To simplify algebraic expressions, you need to combine like terms and apply the rules of operations. Like terms are terms that have the same variables raised to the same power. By combining like terms, you can reduce the expression to its simplest form. You can also simplify expressions by using the distributive property and performing operations within parentheses first.
3. What is the difference between an algebraic expression and an equation?
Ans. An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that consists of variables, constants, and mathematical operations, but it does not have an equal sign. It represents a relationship between quantities. On the other hand, an equation is a mathematical statement that contains an equal sign and represents a balance or equality between two expressions. Equations are used to solve for unknown variables.
4. How can algebraic expressions be used in real-life situations?
Ans. Algebraic expressions can be used in various real-life situations. For example, they can be used to calculate the cost of items based on their prices and quantities, determine the distance traveled based on speed and time, or find the area or volume of geometric shapes. Algebraic expressions are also used in solving word problems and formulating mathematical models for real-world phenomena.
5. What are some common mistakes to avoid when simplifying algebraic expressions?
Ans. When simplifying algebraic expressions, it is important to avoid common mistakes such as: - Forgetting to apply the distributive property correctly. - Combining unlike terms. - Forgetting to perform operations within parentheses first. - Mistakenly canceling out terms or factors that cannot be canceled. - Making errors in sign changes when simplifying expressions with negative numbers. By being aware of these common mistakes and practicing carefully, you can simplify algebraic expressions accurately.
