‘Malu Bhalu’ is a very special & beautiful poem extracted from Kamla Bhasin’s Malu. Bhalu the poem has been translated by Sandhya Rao. The poem is about a little polar bear & her Journey to learn new things.
High up in an icy lair
Lived a little polar bear
Snow white, snow bright was her mane,
Malu Bhalu was her name.
Very soon our Malu Bhalu
Learnt the things her parents knew.
Fish to catch, big and small...
Malu was a clever girl.
Summary: The first two Paragraphs of the poem describe the little bear Malu Bhalu. They lived on ice. She was loaded with white fur. She was a little polar bear learning new things. She learns about fishing & other activities from her parents. She was a very clever girl indeed.
Malu said to her mother one day:
Ma, I’m going far out to play.
I want to see the things that lie
There beyond the big blue sky.
A little patience, child, said Mum,
In the summer when next it comes.
Summer?... Patience?... What a test!
Malu simply could not rest
Summary: The third & the fourth Para of the poem highlight the curiosity of the little bear. One fine day Malu asked her mother if she could go out far to play. She wanted to discover new things. Malu’s mother replied to have some patience. She asks Malu to wait till the summer. It was time to test Malu’s patience. Malu couldn’t resist but wanted the summers to arrive soon.
Summary: The fifth & sixth Paragraphs of the poem highlight the guidance of Malu’s mother. Malu’s mother advised her to learn the initial things first. Malu’s mother holds Malu tight in her arms as she realizes her daughter is now growing up. Malu’s mother then told Malu she has to learn to swim now. Malu gets worried about hearing this from her mom. Malu questioned her mom about how would she do it Malu’s mother assured her to do what she said.
She had no choice, no other way,
Malu had to swim that day.
Tight she gripped her mother’s hand,
Into the water splash! to land.
Brave mother’s brave young daughter!
Doubt and fear she left behind her.
Malu swam with all her might,
It didn't matter wrong or right.
Summary: The seventh & eighth Paragraphs of the poem describe the choice as she wanted to discover the world on her own. Malu hold her mom’s hand tight & jumped into the water. She was as brave as her mother. As she jumped into the water the doubt & fear were over. She gained confidence & swam with all her courage.
But swimming came so naturally,
Her mother knew this and all could see.
Fearless was Malu, this she knew,
Not just brave, but special too.
Summary: The last Paragraph of the poem concludes the poem in a positive way. Malu’s mother got assured that Malu was not only brave & fearless but was very special as well. The poem is a very beautiful piece describing the relationship between a daughter & a mother. How a mother prepares her daughter & teaches her everything is very beautifully mentioned in the poem.
